Opinions for my quest concern

Hello.

In my game, I've got the main character finding a broken music box. The box is part of the plot, and the character has to find parts and fix it. Simple enough.

But I'm struggling over a concern:
I want the player to be able to find the parts needed to fix the box as they go through the game (again, simple enough), but I'm worried about if they don't find all the parts before they move on.

Any suggestions?

You could always just have a blocker that won't let them get past a certain point if they don't have all the music box parts, if it's necessary for the plot.

In all fairness, the player should either know that the parts are necessary so that they look for them, or else have the parts dropped by bosses or whatever.

If finding all the parts is needed to carry on the plot, then there should be clues or something - otherwise the player will be thinking "huh, what music box?"

Have it that when the player gets to the continuing point, clues start becoming more and more detailed, for the... slower players.
