One quick question

I am using RMXP, and i've searched for a way to call the actors level through a script like $game_actor.level = 10 or something like that, but it simply doesnt work. I really dont know anything bout RGSS so I was jus playing around with it. So what i need is a way to call an actors level using a script.

PS: I dont want to use variables for this
