New Artist Critique

Recently, my boyfriend and I have gotten into a little bit of an argument. He believes his art to really, really suck, while I believe his art is actually quite good. Well, I decided to get a bit of a third opinion, aka you guys. So, goers of RMXP.org... is my boyfriend a good artist, or am I just too biased to notice that he sucks?

Picture one looks like one of those generated facesets.
Pic two, the first face looks nice, but the rest lacks consistency. Also from what I can see, seems like he draws faces better then bodies. Tell him to use references for body poses.
The third pic, it's a nice design. I don't usually see the webbed spines go down the front of the face. Shows creativity, but that's not how you use colored pencils. Color pencils were made to replace paint. Don't color lightly, press hard, blend colors, learn technique.

I wouldn't say he sucks, but I would say he needs to practice more and develop his skills further. He can and will get better.

Its not that he sucks or doesn't suck. Its that he hasn't a lot of experience. So by that standpoint, yes, he "sucks". But then so do a lot of people.

You must also understand an artist is his worst critic, he sees the flaws and mistakes that other people don't. So while his art may be good relative to your viewpoint, its no good to his, and most often never will.

Your bf needs moar exp to lvl up yo.

tl:dr    he sucks, but can fix that with practice

They're all good drawings, just not great works of art. (Do you expect them to be?)
Any person couldn't produce these, though. He's a good artist, and can take these even further to the point where they are great works of art. (In other words, practice!)

I'd suggest a Wacom tablet to him if he's serious about his art.  Pencil paper drawings are nice, but a tablet is really an amazing tool.  Honestly, I think he's not too bad.  I do agree on the age deal, because with age comes experience.  So if he's been drawing for three years, then he's not too bad, but if he's been drawing for ten years, then he really needs to practice more, or maybe his calling is elsewhere.

I give him a 7/10 for the style of art he's going for.  Honestly, if he was using a digital tablet and had a few more examples of characters, I'd ask if he was interested in doing face graphics for FateDrawn Studios.

Nice job, boyfriend.

Tablet is only nice if he is interested in digital work. Pen and pencil can still work amazing wonders because its just a medium. Its like telling someone that they should use watercolor because of what it does.

Masc pretty much hit it on the head. But then again I've seen worse 20+ year olds. So he's doesn't suck. He just doesn't have a very well developed style either. No one sucks at art. Its just some have more practice and understanding in the subject manner.
