Need SERIOUS CRITS!

So I am, sadly, coming to realise although I love my bigger sprites they are simply not practical for RMXP, and they take me far to long to complete (approx. a week for a single sprite without animation; that's too long). So they've been downsized.

Now I have this:

My main issue is getting some kind of definition. Even on this light background he's getting pretty hard to read; he'd completely blend into to the tileset. Because he's so small I can't simply add an outline without everything going to hell, but I don't know what else to do!

I also made a faceset for this little guy:

The obvious problem here is the hair. I'm really quite bad at getting the fringe/bangs to sit on the forehead, unless it's completely straight-cut.

I'm open to any suggestions, criticisms, tutorials, paint-overs; whatever! Please help!

Um nahchito, she doesn't mean that she doesn't know how to use them. Her issue is the time and effort it takes to make one of the sprites.

Jesus Harlem Christ, man. @_@;;

And also it would mean I'd need "bigger" tilesets, like, 6 tiles for a wall instead of 3, etc. That would make mapping harder and just leave me with a bigger workload overall.

And I didn't actually resize anything; I started over, working smaller. The lack of quality and detail is the issue I am asking for help with in the first post; I know it is present, I just don't know what to do about it!

Hmm...

To me it seems very feminine, which I guess would be good if your trying to make a "girly" game. But it reminds me of templates used for those unknown Gameboy Adv. games that usually were based on you being a fairy and what not.

As for the definition. You need to have a definite outline. Use a dark color, it needs it severely. Also I would add some shading to the head and skin tones.

Just use a few shades darker around his/her head (in the sprite).  It won't be a defining line, but it will help pop it out from the background.  Also, use a couple darker pixels on its body. (alternatively, add a few highlighting sprites to the face.)

i think she needs a bigger head (in the face) like more of a top and back to it or something.

i really like the sprite a LOT. i need to look over it in more detail but for now i'm enjoying it. it looks a lot like the sprites in a style that i've been experimenting with more recently, so definitely keep going with this. it's certainly on the right track.

It's adorable, but I have poor eyesight and I have a very hard time seeing him, especially on light backgrounds.

I think a stylish dark outline (for the whole sprite, not individual sections) wouldn't hurt the style, and would help the sprites "pop" for folks who can't see very well/if you use light/detailed maps.

By outline, I mean make a silhouette of the entire character, "increase" its size by one pixel overall, then slap the sprite over it. That's what I mean by outlining the entire thing. That'd also be easier than outlining individual sections, too.

Thanks missingo. I was actually going to do what you suggested but I think the new hair masks this enough for it not to be an issue.

Slight edit of the face (less girly lips, changed that shape of the braid):

Also, running:

That looks rather good, though I'd make the sprite just a tad bigger. Especially for people like Venetia with eyes from hell.

don't make the sprite bigger, but 2x everything. work on half-size resolution and thenscale evertyhing up. the result's very nice

It'd be fine if she set the game to play at 200% (pixel resize).

But actually would you mind blowing this stuff up 200% so we can critique? I still can barely make it out ;(

Much better.
ok now then.
I like it. Not to much to crit about. I feel as if pants are missing something, but not quite sure. But your right for one thing it did get all pixely, but thats fine for me.

It looks good now that I can see it, sorta.
But should there not be a more darker yellow at the ponytail?

I think that is it.
Maybe try adding those holes in the ears at the top, on the sprite. to make it match more, butI think you might also be able to go with out it. It actualy looks good with or without, or at least I think. maybe some contrast would work to.

anyway, I like it it is very cute.
