Need opinions (Character Art)

Okay, so since I am using ready made resources, I wanted to edit them up a bit and make the characters my own.

Here's what I came up with. I dare say I did a good job making it different from the very original  Anyway, what I need help with is looking at this image of some variations I came out with:

I'm trying to make the characters shirt different color from my original recolor (picture 1). I started by turning it maroon red,(picture 2), but I thought it looked weird? Then, I figured maybe it'd look good with red pants? Yuck! (picture 3). Looks really weird. Anyway, then I tried a blue shirt, (picture 4) same problem as picture 2.

Does it look like a shirt? Or just a 2 color jumpsuit?

It just looks weird to me so I wanted to get others opinions, please. Which one looks best. or should I keep with the original?

Any comments are appreciated, and any other opinions on how I can make it look better are welcome as well. (I plan on coloring the "scarf" thing the same color as the final shirt I choose)

Thank you!  :thumb:

I'd say a silly thing to be picky about. :p  but If I had to choose i'd go with jbrist's opinion. The red one looks like a jumpsuit rather than a seperate pants. Pretty boys don't wear jumpsuits. :>

Awesome Bro

But.. Shizu.. what if I wore a jumpsuit ? You saying I wouldn't be pretty !?!?!

TENGU ATTACK !!!!

"Mweggle Mweggle Kyahainik !!!"

Lol, just kidding :p

I'd have put this in Design and Development, but meh, I think the first just looks the best lol

Hee hee. As you can see, I don't post a lot here. (I stick to the shadows...) I wasn't really sure where to put this so next time, I'll know

It's funny you say that because I had done the recolor and thought it looked fine, until a friend whos helping with feedback for my game saw it and said that when I do the character set it would look boring with just black and grey. Ah well.

Thanks for the input! I guess I'll just stick with the original for now, and I'll go make the character set and post that up later for comments  Thanks a lot everyone!

It looks fine as long as you keep the shirt a different color than the pants.  In the frame where it's combined, it definitely seems like a jumpsuit.  It would help to have a small bit of pants showing above the belt, and if the pants had a bit of texture to differentiate them (seam lines, pinstripes, etc.)  Generally though I think if you used two slightly different tones you could keep the all-red look which might look good.

Me thinks you should credit the original artist. :D

Also, try editing the scarf, the brown doesn't really go well with the gray jacket in my eyes, and red with gray = perfect.

I believe the original artist was whomever did the graphics for RMVX ... Who needs no credit, considering the EULA (basing my judgments off RMXP's, since there is no completed English EULA yet for the full version).

It'a fairly pointless to watermark a recolor, and I can't even really tell what was recolored. What, the shirt/pants under the jacket?

Sorry, it's just ... That would only take someone like 5 minutes on a slow day ...

Not trying to be condescending or rude, but I'm just saying that watermarks aren't particularly necessary on products with very little time invested. I'm all about progress, but, I mean, the recolor isn't even that great. The contrast needs to be increased when converting greys to color, and the saturation reduced.

But nice try, keep working at it :). The only way to progress is through experimentation, right?

Oh, I see!

lorddonk, please credit Ruruga in the future when you use their work. Just because he's(?) Japanese doesn't give you the right to redistribute without credit! Thanks.

Just to clear this up, I intended to credit them in my game, I just didn't think to credit them here. Sorry! While rather late, I updated the first post. The character original is from: http://fayforest.sakura.ne.jp

And still, I watermarked it just for that reason, if someone uses it, it won't be the exact same colors as the character in my game, at least.

Aww... come on!  I changed the hair which took forever, the eyes, the jacket, and then in the test edits the shirt/pants...

Thanks for the comments! Ratty I agree, I do have to change the scarf. I am thinking of doing the first image with a red scarf, but I have to test it out first.

EDIT: Completely off-topic, but I was just wondering... I was thinking about making a simple tutorial teaching how to make a basic website for a game. It would have HTML, and a little CSS introduction. What do you guys think? Would it be a helpful addition to the tutorials section? Or would people not find it very useful?

I think there's plenty enough information out there on how to get started with web design and you couldn't possibly cover even the basics in a forum tutorial in a way that would result in people making reasonably functional sites.  If you *were* to do such a thing I would suggest building a generic "My RMXP RPG" site into which they could plug in personalized content.  I don't want to be a negative nancy but I just don't see how you could teach all the principles of design that go into a good site in this kind of format, there are entire websites dedicated to such things and they still end up with a lot of failed students :)

I don't see why you'd water mark a recolor when you can get the exact color by using the dropper tool in say photoshop. :\ As far as the recolor goes. The eyes are far too saturated blue. That scarf is way out of place now and the why grey for the coat? It seems to blend in with the armor more and I'm sure when you recolor the spirte it'll blend in way too much. Might want to think about that. The red and blue on the clothes are pretty saturated too.

I like that... recolor... huh... nice nice... but his Blue Shirt shouldn't match the color of his eyes...
you would want to go with a darker color... also Raven is right... Grey for a coat and the same color of the armor makes them almost visually run together... actually colors would be easier to pick out if you gave an option and some background history... cause he honestly doesn't look like a main character... YET...

Again, thanks a lot for the comments! I really appreciate them, this is the closest I've gotten to releasing an RMXP game but the bad main character I had before just kept nagging at me to re-do it.

But the way I see it, is at least then someone has to do a little work to get the exact same copy of mine. Until then, my version is "original" compared to the creator's original that most people will just use as is

I didn't move the scarf though but as far as the armor:
Exactly  After I did the sprite last night and finished it here's what I came up with (top left):

It looks really weird.. so my alternative, was I tried the blue coat, and the red shirt. Also, I colored that little "jewel" in the armor that was bothering me. (That jewel needs to be darkened a bit, I think)

I changed the scarf color too. And I like it a lot but I'm anxious to hear comments before I redo another sprite for this guy.

Oh, and ignore that face set, for some reason it messed up when I flattened the image in Photoshop.

Thanks!  I'm trying to make my game original. People usually hate on the RTP and generic graphics so I'm trying to spice them up a bit to make my game stand out!

This is where it'd be nice if I ever updated my project thread...

Basically, without going overly into details, my game is about this character, Issac Ivan, 16, a Magician from "the town of the sun". He is fascinated with swords, and weapons of humans, but for obvious reasons, can't pursue these interests. That's why he is wearing the armor. My thought pattern with the blue eyes was basically blue eyes>magic and I feel the same about the jacket part now.
