My first tileset

Hello everybody! today I watched a certain video on youtube that showed me how to do pwnage rock walls, so I made one, and then I worked out how to make bricks, so I made a house, and I just worked off that! I even made a roof for the house! (In autotile form!) I'm quite proud of myself, I've never been a good graphics designer, and now I get the glory of making a tileset! Please critique me on this, bear in mind that this is my FIRST EVER tileset, so please don't be too harsh.

I actually re-coloured the whole thing, and made a new door, it looks much better now. I also made a staircase :p Thanks for the help (the guy who posted the new rock and door) I can't remember your name, You made things much easier.

Does it look final fantasy-ish?

Lmao. Jokes at my poll vote. It's not bad at all for a beginner. You need to add contrast to your roof/doors. Your bricks need texture, have a look at the XP rtp for reference. Your rocks aren't bad, but you need to add tone. They look too flat atm.

It's not bad for starters, I think the colors on the first one is pretty good considering it's a first tileset.

For colors, I would recommend starting from warm colors and going to cool colors for the shadow colors. So instead of having the same color but brighter/darker, it goes from a yellowish brown to a blueish brown or even blue/purple itself.

The door itself is very orange, and pillow shaded too. I can understand why people would shade like that, but try to get away from that. Pillow shading is like going from dark at the edges, and bright in the very center. It's good to have a reference for objects/doors, looking at some photos and commercial game graphics could help.

I find working on a middle grey background rather than a white one could help too.

For the stairs, I would draw them as you would regular stairs, then just make them brown or something. If you look at Secret of Mana, they have regular grey stairs for the rock walls. You could do something that looks more natural too if you'd like, but first it's best to get the shape of the stairs down.

You're welcome! Slight scold here, but don't just go and copy the tiles like that (Mainly the red roof one, as that's pretty much an exact copy I think). I think it's good to have an idea in mind, and look at photos/other works as well. But yeah, keep it up, practice is always good.

Yay thanks that's exactly what I'm aiming for! I just lowered the saturation on all the tiles and now it looks awesome!

I think that it's pretty decent considering the fact that your new to this. I think you have potential, keep working on it!

Hey I figured out a way of making better tilesets! Now i pulled out all my game boy games and tried to copy them. (not exactly though.) It even worked for HMDS!
