My first Sprite

Ok...so here is my attempt at making my first sprite from scratch for the game I'm working on.  I AM going for the more classic look where the sprites are just dumbed-down representations of the battle sprites.  Here is my problem, I just can't seem to get the side-view right.  I'm no artist and I'm just completing this with trial and error so any suggestions would be nice.
