My first compositions - Need suggestions, critique, n' ideas

Hello. For a long time, I've been inspired by a variety of composers, ranging from Beethoven with his legendary Symphonies , to Zun with all the godly music he composed for Touhou.

So I've decided to start composing midis and using a converter to make them into mp3's since it will be a long time before I could completely understand Fl Studio(Plus I like the interface of Noteworthy Composer better) and I am coming here for feedback.

Void
Cavern of the Beast - Broiled Crystals
Carefree days - Whackiness Ensues
Youkai of Peace and Pain

I really want to improve as a composer. So if you have just general tips and guidance, feel free to let me know.

bah i wish i wasn't strapped for time to listen at the moment, but i think the first one is really nice. i think you maybe need to throw a few more instruments into the mix, and progress it a bit more. you're off to a nice start man. :}

as far as becoming a composer, you could just learn a bit of music theory, and how to use different modes or some stuff like that. if you already know this stuff, you just need to kepe at it and find out what works for you, probably.

Yeah, I was thinking of going back to redo Void one day. I made it simply as training for handling those kinds of instruments.

Music has always been a huge fascination to me, so perhaps I should take that advice and learn some music theory. Where would you recommend I could learn a bit more about it?

sorry about the half-assed comments before, i has time to listen to these now. :fap:

broiled crystals is interesting in a few respects. it gives off an asian feel with the bell, which is really interesting on top of the ominous strings. it's pretty neat, and it'd be cool to develop it further with a bit more punch, and perhaps a less synthy drum. (those snares sounded odd with these instruments)
the horn was a nice touch too.
that one wouldn't be too much of a problem stretching into a 'villains having a devious conversation' bgm if that's what you're going for. at least that's the vibe it gave me.

carefree days..
:l
hm. guitar synth is cheesy and i think it sounds like you kinda played on the somewhat amusing sound of the synth.. in an interesting way. i think if i heard this in any video game, it'd be absolutely hilarious. perhaps some kind of hyper minigame segment or something really wacky. this one is quite silly and really really fun. nice.

youkai of peace and pain
i love the spacey synth instantly. those are always cool. this sounds like something from one of those boring mako-reactor places in ff7. especially the minimal, fingerpick-bass. theres not much i can get out of this, unfortunately. i think it would make a nice bgm, in that it doesn't jump out and annoy me, and the progression seemed like it wasn't something that you're supposed to follow, like it just kept doing whatever (not in a bad way).

ummmmmmmm if you want to learn music theory... i dont know where to do that. i just picked up the absics of it by learning scales. :\

i have no idea why nobody seems to have any input on these, theyre pretty cool. you're definitely capable of composing some neat stuff

Wouldn't really call the next two songs my "compositions", but rather some slight remixes in an attempt to fix the b0rked ripped midis of Lunar DS:
Lunar DS Dragon Boss
Lunar DS Boss Battle 3

I just thought I'd post them since they sound really cool and it was after a long while of trying to fix up a lot of shit wrong. There still are errors such as a different percussion, but that's what makes it a remix. That, and the different samples I used.

Here's a very WIP version of my new composition:
http://lishy1.webs.com/shamisen%202.mid

The theme I tried to go for was "Dojo Combat"'. Plus I just really love the Shamisen instrument (Call me a weeaboo if you want, but it's who I am.)

There are still instruments and such I must add, but this is the melody.
What do you think? Suggestions? Critique? Anything?

I like the last one you made. The shamisen brings me back to the super nintendo: Final Fight. Very good however, there's something in it like a breakdown where the song calms down a bit then brings a climatic part.
Sets for the feeling, because it seems like it's one straight away flow especially with the drums.
Above all this is a nice piece. As for the rest there are some instruments that are very distinctive but not really a problem. Keep up the good work. :thumb:
