My first completely original sprite WIP

Though I have been here and sprited for quite a while, I have never, until now, made sprite without taking from another one usually from the rtp. This time, I made with only the template. I'm fairly proud, but I know there is always something to fix. So that's why this thread is here. Though I only have the first frame, is there anything you can tell me to fix?

Your character needs character. One really bitchin' defining quality. From a spriting perspective he's symmetrical. But from an artist perspective he needs some flare. Single frame sprites are fun. Complete sets from scratch are a pain. Of course you can do it.

What do you think of my WIP (non RTP). I hate the belt. He dosen't need it.

What do you mean by character? Could you give me an example? I'll show you what I used for his design. I was messing with photoshop and came up with this...

The middle guy on the right is the guy I decided to sprite, though.

just a question, why are there four of the same guys?

and there is no shading, and it IS too symetrical

Sly means that it looks the same on both sides.. only upside down. and he's given an exaple of the same thing.. practice what you preach young man :P

ZephyrSkye: the character art you show for your basis seems to have a level of detail that would go fairly uunoticed on the RTP sprite. The white chest plate appears more like a two tone shirt than a white covering over a green shirt, similar to how the pants are a two tone of white and blue. The sleeves look more like long arm bands than nearly full length sleeves, and the belt on the left leg is impossible to make out, due to it's relative size.
I would suggest finding a sprite that provides you with enough room for all the details you are trying to work in; there is no shortage of templates to be found, most of which can still work with the RTP sized tilesets.

Pretty good for your first original sprite, but I personally like the Red/Black/White color scheme better than the Blue/Green/White you provided. I think it blends together better. The current one just isn't working for me, especially with that particular pastel green (although it's a darker green on the sprite...). ^^

Yeah, about the symmetry on the "painting" I was just messing around with characters I drew. I liked those color schemes. I like the red and black better, too but it doesn't fit into the character that I'm trying to make. You guys can tell I really simplified things, but I was planning on simplifying it to fit all the other sprites I made for this game, though they were frankensprited/made. I a;ways took a small chunk of something from the rtp chars to make my guy, usually the hair. But, I won't change what template I'm using. I'll try to add more detail and get back to you guys, but yeah, no changing my template.

edit:

How about this? And remember, this IS my very first sprite without frankenspriting. So go easy on me, alright?

everything... like the belts the rope around his waist. especially his cloth sleeves.. and if my eyes serve me correctly, the white part on his upper leg is an "add on" sort of capey thing? on the sprite it looks like jester pants
