My Artwork

Howdy,

First I am no artist, and more and likely never will be. That does not mean I don’t enjoy painting, drawing and taking photographs. I decide, with a little help from my new toy, that I would turn a lot of my analog prints into digital copy’s to keep safe through whatever havoc plays out with originals.

The following is a sample of different pieces I have done over the years, enjoy…

Those are very nice man. I can't draw for hell... Did you draw actual people or are they fictional?
Anyways;
Keep up the good work.

Edit: Oops, I didn't see all of them, I guess they are fiction.

I don't like the coal-style, but your skills are very nice ... I like your second Charcoal picture very much, hence I'm a fan of these 'overbrighted' images (also HDR lighting :P ), and your image looks very similar.

Awesome Bro

I never knew this side of you, Near. I thought what you dominated with scripting, you lacked with art skills. I was wrong!

The firs charcoal piece reminds me of Samara ( the ring ) Which is a good thing.

Nice one mate,

No artist you say? Then explain me how you got such human faces in your charcoal works. Portraits are incredibly hard, it takes MONTHS of intense working to actually make your work remotely look like the model.

What? If you have a bit of practice with the techniques involved in drawings portraits and figures, you can do a full fledged pencil drawing of a model in about 15 minutes. Now that's a rough sketch, but you've got all the details of the folds and their face down so they don't have to sit perfectly still for ages. (trust me, sitting still for 2 and a half hours is NOT fun, I did it for the final when I was a TA for an art class) After you get the folds down and whatnot, you just shade based on your rememberance and how you know it should look. Trust me on this, portraits and figures with pencils are like the only kind of non-computer aided art I'm good at.

But Near, I'm quite surprised by this, you're pretty handy with a pencil and some charcoal, I can see you're not an artist, as these pictures are done extremely well, but without the... Concepts of art I guess. (Like drawings focus to a part of the picture in the Smith Battle one, Neo should probably draw the eye to him, but doesn't really) Anyways, you've got some real skills at this sorta stuff.

EDIT: Oh and I forgot to mention that it's a fresh change from all these topics about 'how do my anime style people look?!'. It's nice to see some art that's not anime or cartoony focused.

focused.
I meant months of practice, not months of working on the same portrait -_-

Pfft, how often do you practice a day?! I mean... As long as you have a decent thing to tell you what sort of techniques you should use, and you practice about 3 hours a day, it takes about a week to be able to draw realistic pencil face portraits, assuming you have decent ability to do shade gradients with a pencil, and a 2B pencil, since H = evil (standard #2 pencils are pretty much just H)

I can shade gradients no problem and I use H almost exclusively.

Howdy,

Thanks all, to answer a few questions . First, those are all real people I need real people or places to draw I can’t see things in my head, other then shading. Second, I don’t draw as much as I should, well if I wanted to be an artist that is. Third, I am completly useless on the PC trust me I may even post some of my attempts later. Fourth I will update this a little later with my paintings and photos when I get them scanned in.

“The first charcoal piece reminds me of Samara ( the ring ) Which is a good thing.” I was not meaning this to happen although everyone that sees it seems to think that.

As well I would be instead to hear what and how to improve in different pieces.

If you want to improve your skills greatly, do blind contour drawings every single day for 30 minutes or more. Blind contour is where you draw an object in real life by looking at it constantly, you don't look down at your paper and you don't lift your pencil up. The point is not to create a realistic looking representation of the object, it is to improve your hand-eye coordination. As your eye moves along every single curve, line, or fold in the object, move your pencil along with it. I gurantee improved results in 3 months if you do this.

That is one of the best things to do to improve your sketching skill. Once you actually get really practiced at it, it's possible to draw anything that way, only glancing down every now and then to make sure you're in the right spot. My art teacher had us practice that every day, and I got relatively good at drawing a person without looking at my paper. It DOES take a long time to get good enough to do that accurately though. I'd always try outlining something I saw and the end of the line would be 4 inches above the start.

Also rexxz, I didn't say H couldn't do gradients, I just think of 2B as more of an easier pencil to use, H takes some skill. I don't know why, but I simply cannot draw with an H or lighter pencil, I have to go B or darker. (Well, up to about 4B, 8B is not for drawing, that's just for making a black spot on your page)
