Multiplayer?

Is there any way to make RPG Maker VX games massively multiplayer (as in multiple connected through the internet, not as in the engine has to handle huge numbers of people)? And if so, what do I need to learn to know how to do it? I had a brilliant idea (which I'll likely never do because I'm too lazy and don't have enough intention on getting anything ever done) for a game, and I just want to check the plausibility of it?

Within the game players would have to trade items with each other, and battle each other. That would be the extent of players interactions with each other. I didn't know if that mattered but there is no mass cooperation between players to do anything, in contrast to normal MMORPGs.

As a matter of fact, people are making MMORPG's in RMXP..

Given the fact that RMVX is a smoother and faster engine, I'm pretty sure such a thing is possible.

You would have to be able to implement all sorts of scripts..
And I don't know if an online script for RMVX has been made yet?

But, it's definetly possible.

That's cool! It's also good to know that it's just a script type thing, I'll let someone else do all the work and leave a bunch of instructions on how to use it (I'm in no hurry to get anything done).

What's the general way to start projects (assuming I had the plan that I would actually get it done, or atleast some working game sort of like what I imagined)? Planning? Gathering a group to help with things I can't do (for instance, I am the worst graphics maker, and any map I've ever made looks like crap compared to a lot of the nicer maps I've seen)? Brushing up on the things I can do? Go right in and start making something (a working prototype of the game, so people are more inclined to help)? How do the successful ones start?

And also, are people inclined to help (work?) for money? I can't pay huge amounts, but I'd be willing to put up to a couple grand if I could be sure it would turn out well (I feel my idea is so brilliant, that it will inspire thousands more in donations).

"...it's just a script type thing, I'll let someone else do all the work..."
Dude, are you serious? Do you think scripters are just mindless ragdolls that will do your bidding?

"(I feel my idea is so brilliant, that it will inspire thousands more in donations)."
Not to sound mean but I lol'd pretty hard on that line. Maybe you were joking, I'm not sure, but that sounds like a joke to me.

To me it sounds like your fairly new to RPG Maker. I would highly recommend that you create a few small demo's and atleast finish a few small games by yourself to refine your skills and practice using the program before you spend "a couple grand" on something that, to be honest, you will never finish if you've never ever designed a game before.

Okies... right. *Prepares generic MMORPG making answer*

Online gaming is certainly possible in both RMXP and RMVX, but to do it you need to learn scripting at least to a decent level. You need to know what scripts you are editting and why.

There are two routes you could go down really. The first is to use Netplay+. Trouble is, as many have found, it is flawed in some aspects which make it not very newbie-friendly. This is fairly self explanatory, but it's when you get errors or have to make it SDK2 compatable you'll get problems. That's where knowing RGSS comes in. Also you'll need RGSS is you ever come to edit any of the default systems, or add your own systems in.

Netplay+ features trade, chat, guilds, PM'ing, admins and moderators, etc.

The second option is building the system yourself from scratch, which is not all that hard. The basic modules you need are included in the Ruby folder (you just need to copy and paste them into your scripts). These are the TCP module and the Winsock modules (I believe) possible some more. You also need a server, and a Network method to send and recieve data. Now, not many know how to do this, but it should be easy to learn if you know RGSS through just plain simple Ruby TCP tutorials. I know there are some out there as I have seen them. Never actually tried them though, so can't help you there.

In answer to your question, it is possible.

But it's not really as simple as copying and pasteing scripts, it requires knowledge of RGSS.
