Mu Tong Shang Zhen [Composition]

Excuse the gibberish title. :p

I wrote this song for my father's birthday yesterday. It's called "Mu Tong Shang Zhen", which roughly translates to "Sheppard boy goes to the city". It's intended for a bamboo flute instead of the classical one, but it's all I had so, heh.

Basically, it starts out in the morning with a solo flute tune, and then starts to "go to the city" or whatnot. Just picture him playing a bamboo flute I guess.

Hope it can be of some enjoyament!

I didn't know you made music! And I'm actually thoroughly impressed with this song. You're using EWQLSO no doubt? There's only a few things I'd change, and I really hope you do because it really is great. I'm assuming the strings coming in is the climax of the song; and if it isn't, then it is now . The strings in my opinion sound very quiet. Try layering some deep cellos. I know you're trying to keep it a light hearted song, but I really think it would add that little something if it had more presence. The other thing is your percussion, they sound pretty quiet. Try making all the percussion except for the bells a little louder.

Excellent job though, A+.

Thanks, I'm flattered that coming from you. :> And nope, I'm too poor for EWQL right now. This is with Garritan Personal Orchestra sound library (+Finale 2006 for notation).

Good point on the strings and percussion, I definitely see what you mean. I'll see what I can do. Many thanks for the feedback!

If you use finale, then technically you're more advanced than me, I seriously can't stand staff notation to write my songs. Btw, post the song once you've made the changes .

Damn Reives, I want that GPO flute. It sounds so much better to me than the flutes Reason or my other sound library have...

Anyway, you've definitely been improving lately, a lot. Other than the issues Serenade pointed out about the lack of a deeper string section, and the percussion being a little on the soft side, this is incredibly well written. I love the countermelody the bassoon (?) does with the flute. Though it might have been nice to hear some call and response stuff between the two instruments, as opposed to them both playing at the same time. Like the flute plays a line, then the bassoon plays a line...

Anyway, it's great to see people improving in their music. It makes me want to write more stuff. :)

What did your dad think of this, by the way?

Wow, I like the song very much.
Could you post the notes?
I'm not very good with the wood flute, but I might be able to record me playing it. Just a maybe, though - I haven't played my wood flute in a little while, so I won't guarantee anything.

Many thanks for the feedback, guys.  Sorry, I've been a bit busy, so I haven't gotten to editing it and etc. yet - will probably do so tomorrow. Same with giving ya the sheet music for the flute part, gratheo. :> And @Arcanum: my dad kind of just gave a "smile and nod" response to be honest, heheh. He's not the cheering type, but I know that he appreciated it.
