MP3's Sound Terrible in XP

For some reason whenever I use an MP3 for a BGM I get audio artifacts and "popping" sounds, as if it where a poorly encoded file. The sound file sounds great in winamp, but terrible in RMXP. If I convert it to OGG or WAV it sounds perfect, but OGGs can't be streamed so I get a delay before it plays, and WAVs are way too huge to feasibly use in a game. This doesn't make much sense, as the source file is exactly the same in all cases (it was originally an MP3).

Any tips?

I don't have any problems with this. As a reference, one of my "working" MP3 files uses 128 kbps bit rate, stereo, and 44 Hz audio sample rate. You might have problems if the bit rate is too high. I manually converted all my songs down to 128 kbps to make them take less space.

Check those settings in your MP3s and perhaps try changing some of them.

No dice, they still pop and skip at any bitrate.

Edit: I also have this problem when playing other people's games who use MP3s. Could be something to do with my computer? This problem is exactly the same in VX as well. Any normal audio program plays MP3s fine though. I've updated my drivers as well.

Final Edit: I found the source of the problem. It was my DirectShow codecs. I installed a codec pack for DShow and it cleared up all the issues I was having. I guess RM was the only program I was using that played MP3s via DShow  .
