Mp3 and MIDI (DirectShow) problems.

Okey-dokey, this is my first post here, but I seriously need some help.

I just migrated from my old XP desktop to a nice and shiny Windows Vista 64-bit laptop. Everything was going almost perfectly smooth, until I tried to play a music file in my game via sound test. The problem being, XP freezes whenever I try to play certain audio files. After some tinkering, I discovered that I can play select sound effects and such without a hitch, however other audio files will simply end up in a trip to task manager to shut down the now unresponsive XP window. The files that crash seem to be the ones that make an obvious utilization of those DirectShow and ffdshow things (what with their icons rapidly multiplying across the task bar).

Does anyone think they can help me with this?

(btw) I did try to install a codec pack for a game I installed (K-lite codec pack), but uninstalled it due to the game not working on Vista. Perhaps this has something to do with my problem?

This may sound like a stupid answer, but you're sure they're MP3s? Can you open them in Media Player or some other programme? They may be corrupted for some reason. I ask this because I am running Vista, and I have not had any problem with MP3s. Most of the sound files I use in RMXP are .wav files, though, too. You might try finding a programme that can convert your MP3s into .wav files.

Everything plays just fine in other programs. And yes, they're Mp3's.
The one's that cause the program to freeze are Mp3's and Midi's, which are the ones that use the built in DirectShow Synthesizer.

.wav and .ogg files work. Sure I could just go through and convert each of them, but when you've got hundreds of audio files....that just won't work so well. Also, when I play a game (including mine) straight from the .exe file, everything works. It's just in the sound and play tests that the problem arises.
