Modern Tileset for my game [WIP]

Jason

Awesome Bro

Hey everyone, You may or may not remember me saying that I was making a Cartoon style game, Well if you didn't, I am, Lol.

It's mainly Futuristic, But there are some Modern day elements, and this is my first try [WIP] of a Modern Tileset, Don't blabber on about no shading, Because that is the style of the game.

Also, you get to see one of the Main Characters (The Trench Coat guy), So... let's see what you all think:

Jbrist.

So much comes to mind when i look at this .. Futurama ... Family Guy .. The Simpsons .. I like how it looks and feel this could be a very fun game to play agin names come to my head like Inuyasha ( not the same style but a cartoon none the less ) Gundam/Wing a lot of good things i see in this and cant wait for more please update when you get some more :) haha

Me again. Shading is what it needs, evn though you said that it's not going to have any. It almost certainly must have shading, unless you have massive black border lines.

Speaking of black border lines, if you are going to go without shading, you'll need to surround every part of your furniture with a border.

There. (couldn't get enough time to finish it all...)

But I said theres NO shading, because that is the style of my game, and the tileset matches nicely...

My style of colouring is just:
1 colour for the outline
1 colour for the base

And that's it. And it looks quite nice and blends nicely with my Character Set (The Template is on the Gathering of Templates, the only one of it's kind, Lol)

Edit--
Update: Added new Screenshot. - Further Progress

I think it looks good but I agree with samboy. If you don't have shade it should have black out line because without that it doesnt look cartoon style it look WIP style so if you will have black outline it would be perfect.

Jason

But if I give it a black outline, I'll have to redo all the Character sets, and thats something I don't want to do, and I think the tileset looks cool as it is.

And besides, it's not a black-outlined cartoon I'm thinking of, Think of Futurama, they have 1 shade for the skin/clothes etc. and a darker outline.

Hmmm... well you did ask for analysis by posting in this topic.... I agree with the outlined well... everything.. I think it would give both ur tilesets and chars a really nice look... it's not too hard to black outline everything is it? All it takes is tracing the outer shape of everything...

The_JSTREET - Because it is based on Cartoon Graphics, some of them are brightly coloured, Not too brightly, but bright.

J.D. Slasha - I know it would be easy, But my ideas, my style. Lol

Don't confuse choosing not to shade as being a style. All cartoons have some shading, because cartoons imitate reality. And in the real world things have shadows. I think that you choosing not to shade is based upon lazyness (I say that because you even rejected the nice idea about using black outlines because you don't want to edit your work so that it is improved).

No... I'm not lazy, I just don't want to shade because I'm making a full project in this style, If you don't like it, Just don't play the demo when it's released, Or the full game when I get around to bringing it out.

Okay just because you are making an entire project without using the RTP its not an excuse to not shade, if you want this to be a success you should give it your all. I am trying to give you good advice, shading makes a things look better.

Yeah, but why are some people stupid and think Shading makes everything better ? People have different opinions y'know, and I'm bored of playing games made in RMXP that have WAY too much shading.
And if you hate non-shading, What about the old NES/SNES games, They didn't have shading, and some of those games turned out to be the best games of all time.

Those old games lacked shading because the games on the nes and snes had a limited number of colors. And you don't have to resort to calling people who think shading makes games better stupid...and it is a fact that shading can better a sprite.

no one said to have WAY too much shading as you put it, one extra colour is not too much at all, even the black outline makes it look alot better, if you want people to play your game you should listen to their opinions, if you dotn care what they think then you probably shouldnt post your graphics in a place where its meant to be commented on

Jason

Awesome Bro

Yeah, but if you tell people your shading, they expect to see bucket fulls of shading, and that just takes the p*ss.
And this way, its clean and simple.

Alright, alright everyone calm down now kiddos..... Jbrist, no one is denouncing ur shading, we're just merely giving you examples of what might possibly make it more appealing to the gamers that might play ur game...

On the other side, you did put this up for critique when u posted it in this topic, fair enough, that being said let's all just calm down, not resrot to name calling, and all get on with our lives.

jbrist, if you don't want your resource analysed, why are you posting it in resource analysis? If you just want pats on the back or something, take it somewhere else. People are trying to tell you how they believe your set could be improved, which is the entire purpose of this forum. You aren't required to follow their advice, but calling them stupid for giving you analysis when you posted in the analysis forum is, frankly, pretty frigging dense.
