MM's Sprite Attempts

I've looked high and low for a spriter, but thought I should try my hand at it myself. It's really my first attempts, so be critical. I'm trying to improve. Here's what I have so far:

The shading on the coat is to light and does not blend with the other shading on the character. Try either making the shading work or make the other shades the same as the coat.

What other shading specifically? Sorry for being blunt, but I want to improve my technique, so I need every detail.

a bit of contrast in the hair would help

Shades of grey are very hard to make when coloring a coat. You should try using light blue as a shade for the coat (where the lighest parts would be white, and it would end with a light blue color as the darkest)

This sprite has potential, but as others have said it needs more contrast, some parts of the shading seem, random.

Ok. I've worked a little on it. Most notably, I've reshaded the coat. I've yet to fix the pants, so please leave that out. I've also added more saturation to the hair, and made it a little lighter. Again, please critique.

Biggest problem: Not enough contrast in your colors. Don't be afraid to use different values, it'll look better in the end

as said above, plus i think the hair's highlight colour is too gray and the whole sprite is pillowshaded.
try to imagine where the folds will be and where the light will cast a shadow, then add a darker colour to that area, then work your way around it with lighter colours to get a feel for shading
