iirc guitar pro isn't free

Yeah... I Used google, and my brain started hurting from all the pop-ups and faulty links..

Try Tux Guitar, its pretty much the same as Guitar Pro except free.

Guitar Pro is good but quite time consuming (or I'm just too lazy).

If you want piano-roll, go for Anvil Studio. It also features tablature.

If you are good, i think it may be possible for you to even use Fruity Loops
