mawk's ps3 cherry

okay so uh I just got a gift of some cash so I think I'll spend that some cash on a ps3. might as well now that it's got some games worth playing. from you guys who already own a ps3 or have done some research, I'm gonna need some advice.

first off, a backwards compatible ps3 would be cool. I know that later models lost that backwards compatibility, but I'm not sure exactly where. which model should I look for if I want backwards compatibility, and are there tangible disadvantages compared with later models?

secondly, uh, suggest me some games. I'm already getting Little Big Planet, big no-brainer there, it's fucking amazing, but I can't buy something just for one game; that's silly. my tastes are pretty broad; I never got into sports games (I'll play them at other people's houses, but I don't see the point if it's just me,) but aside from that I like just about everything so shoot.

also: is Home or whatever it's called still major gay

I think that's it for now so, yeah. help me out here! :thumb:

The ps3 with backwards compatibility has been taken from off the shelves, they don't sell it anymore. Although, I did hear that later on they will have a download-able patch that will allow the ps3 to have it. (There aren't any real differences between backwards compatibility and non - except the size of the hard drive)

As for games:
Blaz Blue: Calamity Trigger
Street Fighter 4
UFC 2009: Undisputed
Batman: Arkham Asylum
Valkyria Chronicles
InFAMOUS
Prototype
Cross Edge
FarCry 2

That's to name a few. I'm not sure how you feel about fighting games so I only listed 3.

Sadly B/C is gone for quiet some time already . (Since Februari I think)..

I ignore scores whenever I can because reviews are ridiculously subjective and a numberical score is mostly arbitrary ballparking. Batman, inFAMOUS, and BlazBlue look really worth it, though, and some of those upcoming titles look neat too. already have Prototype on xbox.

and that's a shame about the backwards compatibility. not a big thing, though; I have an old ps2 kicking around somewhere.

Definitely get MAG when it releases. I'm in the Beta for the game, and it's friggin amazing.

Pretty much everything else is already listed.. just throwing that out there about MAG.

Def. SF 4, its worth it. Blaz Blue just looks like another Guilty Gear to me, honestly. Genji had horrid cameras but its a pretty fun game.

Gamespot stores around the country sell pro-owned B/C PS3 though. They only come in 20 GB and 60 GBand are usually labeled as B/C models by the seller. The Gamestop in my local mall itself has two B/C 60 GB PS3's on sale, so I'd say it's quite easy to get one.

(Don't worry about the hard-drive size, you can easily pop the hood of a PS3 and replace the hard-drive with a bigger one)

Awesome Bro

Infamous is awesome! Though wait for Cheaper Price. Get Ratchet and Clank cause its cheap same with the first uncharted. Don't Get Cross Edge... unless you can get it cheap... Also the Resistance Series is good

cool beans, you guys

so I got it today. a Slim, because the other option was a gay-ass Uncharted: Drake's Fortune bundle that was a hundred dollars more and came with a game I don't like. the guy tried to give me some song and dance about how OH IT'LL OVERHEAT LOOK THE DISPLAY COPY HAS ONLY BEEN RUNNING FOR TWO HOURS AND IT'S ALREADY WARM but I have no plans to play the thing from dawn until dusk.

I think the place was a mafia front or something because it was just tragically understocked. I got inFamous and LBP, two of the bigger things on my list, but they didn't have anything else worth giving a shit or two. I'll go to a better place next week or something.

it's updating now in what I assume it thinks is dramatic slow motion, so I haven't actually gotten to play yet. pity shame, but whatever, starting up a new console or computer or whatever is never just a matter of "connect the cables and flick it on" in the first place.

Awesome Bro

Yeah, it'll have to update to the 3.01 patch (The .01 patch was a bugfix basically)

And nice choice of games, I would've recommended those two myself actually, along with a few others (I find it's best to have a game from every genre except sports...)

If you do end up going some place next week, I'd recommend picking up some of these, if not all (If you can get 'em cheap enough);

Killzone 2 OR Resistance 2 (... Or both ?) Since they've both got pretty good storylines (Although to be honest the first Resistance was much better than the second in terms of story), although in my opinion, the best feature of both these games is the multiplayer, specifically Resistance 2, since it's basically a 60 man chucklefuck with a nifty 8 player co-op mode too (They're just random missions, not the storyline)

Metal Gear Solid 4, Yeah it's like a 20 hour game, yeah it's only got 6-8 hours of gameplay, but damn the story is immersive and the cutscenes are really nice to watch to be honest... AND I'm addicted to MGO (Metal Gear Online), one of the best online console games EVER. (MGO is on the MGS4 Disc)

Ninja Gaiden Sigma OR Devil May Cry 4 (If you don't already own it for the 360), if you prefer a harder challenge, then definitely Ninja Gaiden Sigma, I've played it through every difficulty, it CAN get fustrating but it's really fun to play, and Devil May Cry 4, to be honest seems like a "noobie" game, since it's extremely easy. Both of them have pretty straight forward storylines, nothing special in that department, but in the sense of a "Kill these guys, go over there, kill more guys... rinse and repeat", they're both great games, and look fucking gorgeous in action.
Which reminds me too.... Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 demo is out now in US I believe, check the store when you can get on, it's out on the 29th too, haha...

And last but not least... you need a fighter... Soul Calibur IV or Street Fighter IV, take your pick, they're both amazing fighters, although Soul Calibur IV is lacking TONS of features from the franchise/series. Although I think Soul Calibur IV would last the longest since there's the "Tower of Lost Souls" mode, where you ascend floors or descend, taking on enemies, and each floor has a challenge, if you can beat it, you unlock new items to use on your created characters. The creation system is also nicely balanced too, for example, I made a powerhouse, and he does 198% damage, but only has 50% health, so it weighs it out quite nicely if I might say so.

However, I've just thought... you lack an RPG in the selections I mentioned, and there's nothing really amazing coming out just yet... I guess the closest thing I can recommend is the amazing...

Valkyria Chronicles, one of the best art styles of any game... EVER, the storyline is actually pretty decent too, and isn't the standard Japanese cliché. If you're wondering how the game plays, it's a tactical battle system, much like Advanced Wars, but well... more control over your characters, so it's all good.

So yeah, they're some of the games I'd recommend you buy, they should last you a while, if you want to check out the demos of some of them, here's which of them have demos;
Killzone 2
Ninja Gaiden Sigma
Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 (I believe it came out today for US...)
Valkyria Chronicles

Okay, so not many demos as opposed to how many games I listed, but either way, they're demos eh, I guess you'll have to make your assumptions of the others from videos etc on YouTube, lol.

I don't "totaly" agree on that list..

Resistance and Killzone are both good games (so basicly you choose between : colourfull game with massive online matches vs. brown/grey coloured game with really good worked out online play) ..

I haven't played MGS4, but from what i've heared its legend. (and cheap to because the release is quiet a time away)

Between DMC and NGS I rather would choose for DMC.. The combo's aren't pre-set and if you don't invest time to master the game, hell and hell difficultie is Hell (you die at 1 hit from ANYTHING, while enemies are harder then on hardest difficultie) SO I wouldn't go saying NGS offers a bigger challenge. (and DMC has bette atmosphere)

as for the fighters deffenly SC4.. and no Tower of souls is pure shit and nothing compared too the earlier SC release special modes. But Character creation is totaly awsome. and easely makes up for the flaws the game has. (and it has online)

AND WHT NO RPG'S??? mate times are changing, look whats coming up:
- Star ocean 4 : the last hope international (better then xbox360 version)
- Final Fantasy versus 13
- White knight chronicles
- Resonance of Fate (aka End of eternity)
- Final Fantasy 13
- Tales of Vesperia (better then xbox360 version)

and of course Valkyria chronicles (but that ones already out..) I'd also want to mention Folklore and Etarnal sonata

Jason

Awesome Bro

Yeah cause he can go out next week and buy RPG's... THAT AREN'T FUCKING OUT YET !

Dumbass... lol.

And actually NGS is TONS harder than DMC4, maybe it's not as hard on normal as DMC4 is on the hardest difficulty, but on Master Ninja mode (The hardest of the hardest...), it's just terrible, your survival chance lowers to 0.01%, and L1 becomes your best friend...

you missed part of my sentecne so who's the dumbass ;)

as for NGS, on master ninja you'll still survive most attacks atleast once.. while that CAN'T be said about DMC4.. HEll or Heel is OHKO against you FROM EVERYTHING

Jason

Awesome Bro

No, I didn't miss or misread anything at all, I recommended a game that's already out, you were recommending games that won't be out for a while by the looks of things... so you are infact, the dumbass, lol.
