Okay, so in my game, since there is only one town I made a system where you can find recipes around the world to get more stock in the shops, but I am having trouble with it because I have it so that you do, say, three quests for people in the town, you go to bed, and then there are new quests the next day. So I am able to make the recipes work if the person doesn't have a quest, but if they do have a quest that day and I find a recipe before I finish the quest, with how I have it set up they'll recognize the recipe or pattern first and then I won't be able to do the quest.
(My recipe system basically works so that you find a recipe in the wilderness, and it activates a switch or variable and then there's a page in the vendor's event to recognize it)
