Mac OS X Tiger on a non-firewire iMac.

Ok, I have an iMac G3
(PowerPC 750 3.0)

I just got mac os 10.4 on cds for ppc, but it requires a firewire port.
Is it possible to get some sort of usb firewire card?

Would OS X recognize it as a firewire card?

I'm not sure if there are any USB Firewire cards.
If you have another PPC Mac, and are able to remove the iMac's hard drive, you could install it on the hard drive using an enclosure.

I could remove it, yes. I see what you mean. I could Switch the hard drive to a ppc mac with a firewire port. I'll try it out.

It should work, since the same .kexts are installed on every system. You can just move around hard drives, and it should work.

I'm not sure G3 can run 10.4, mine only goes to 10.3 (iMac Pro G3)

There are PCI firewire cards, I don't know whether there are any for Macs. I don't understand why the upgrade would require a miscellaneous piece of hardware that almost nobody uses though, are you sure that's the case?

Actually, I use Firewire for my hard drives. I also use Firewire for my media equipment.
Firewire pretty much is a Mac market, though.

PCI won't help, since the iMac is basically "Computer in a Monitor".

Oh right, I forgot we were talking about an iWhack. I know firewire gets used in Macs still but its performance is marginal compared to USB 2.0 and laughable compared to network-enabled devices which can plug in via ethernet, so it's really obsolete and I shy from recommending its use to anyone, even Mac users.

Yeah i can put it on the iMac, its just too much work. instead I'm downloading os 8.6, upgrading to 9, doing all of the 9 updates, then putting os 10.3 on. Believe me, that's less work then trying to find an iMac with a g3 proccesor and firewire. And there's no guarantee it'll work.

What does os x 10.4 need a firewire port anyway for?

Still a pointless reason. Whatever. I finished installing 8.6, 9, all of the 9 updates, and about 60% done the OS X Panther installation. :D

That's because all of the drivers ship with the install.

I do believe that it might be related to the Motherboard or Logic Board driver.
