Hey so I'm thinking of getting a cheap (inconveniently timed and cramped) train to London this week! Just because I've never been.

The cheapest station I can get to is Marylebone.

Given that I have no money at all, my plan is to go to free places like the British Museum, take photos at Westminster, etc.

Only, I'm not from London, and have never been, so I need someone to tell me what it's like...

i.e. If I were to walk from Marylebone to the British Museum to Westminster and back again,

a. Am I likely to get mugged?
b. Is it a bad walk?
c. What else can I see?

Though I'm from Belgium, i've visited London many times. All I can say is the city is pretty safe. Only thing i maybe don't thrust is taking a metro late at night. And there's so much to see in a close range: tower of london, big ben, london eye, piccadilly circus... You can travel between two places cheaply when taking the metro.

Well, imo just buy one of those guidebooks, they are pretty useful.

Well, it's a few hundred miles away (maybe not much to a foreigner, but in a country where everything else is a stones throw it's never been worthwhile), and I live a 15 minute train away from the second city (Birmingham). Trains (and all travel) into London generally cost at least four times as much as "normal" trains.

That said, I just found out the cheapest ticket I can get is a combined standard/first class return. (Standard class there, then first class return)

First class: more leg room, a seat on your own, and free bacon* sarnies.

I don't know why that is. Perhaps nobody travels first class at that time of day :S

But that's to Euston not Marylebone**.

I shall consult a map!



** London is surrounded by I think Eight huge stations in a circle, about a 4 mile walk from anywhere useful, with tube (underground) trains inbetween.

Oh awesome, the British Museum (the main thing I really want to see) is less than half a mile away from Euston, whereas it's a city away from Marylebone.


I've never travelled first class before... that's for rich people. And old people. And people who aren't from the Black Country.

Lol found out why the first class ticket was the cheapest; at that time of day they don't put a first class coach on. So basically it's just a shiny ticket.

Damn, I can either get back into Wolverhampton with a five minute dash for the last bus home of the day at like, 11pm, or pay £6 more.

Found a very cheap ticket but no travel before 7pm from London. Gets me back too late really.

And waiting a day has made the ticket go up a quid.
