I've actually seen golems made in similar shapes many times... It certainly doesn't look like a wall painting...
I think it's a finely unique creature design and quite worthy of praise.
My only critique would be to agree that you need a higher level of difference between colors used for shading... Maybe trying a little brighter color for highlights would help... Lava is really bright if you look at it... This looks maybe more like a blood golem to me?
I played with it just a little in photoshop to give you a hint as to what I'm suggesting... It's only auto-anti-aliased and a 5 min job but I bet you could do something great with it if you highlight it yourself... This was just to show you what I'm talking about...

Just try to make some more difference between the colors in your highlights and shadows ... that should help it look more like there is vibrant fire coming from behind the rocky parts of the lava... Look at a picture of actual lava and you'll see you need to make it very broken up...
