Knights Templar heirs? Or just some bunch of opportunists?

Knights Templar heirs in legal battle with the Pope - Telegraph

Well, it seems like these people filed a lawsuit against Benedict XVI... Here's the article.

"We are not trying to cause the economic collapse of the Roman Catholic Church, but to illustrate to the court the magnitude of the plot against our Order," said a statement issued by the self-proclaimed modern day knights.

Really? How would they expect the Roman Catholic Church not to collapse if it had to pay an enormous amount as compensation? (The assets are worth about 100 billion euros according to their estimate.) Besides, who can proof that their claims are valid? Why didn't they sue the Vatican several years earlier? Why now? Are they capable of paying such a ridiculous amount if they lose?

That's all bull. There's no way the current-day catholic church will pay for something done 7 centuries ago. Neither will they restore their old rank. Laws were different back then, and so were the times.

They're just trying to get publicity or something. I don't know why they think this lawsuit can go through.

Assuming that european law is similar to english law (which it is, sorta), I'm assuming that the following maxim (or a similar european equivalent) applies to the situation: "Delay defeats Equity", "equity" in this sense meaning "fairness" (or close to it).

If someone believes that they have been done wrong by, in English law they have to claim immediately (timescale varying depending on the severity of the claim) or they may be denied their equitable rights as stated in the Maxims of Equity (meaning they get jack shit).

7 centuries is more than enough delay imo.

lol@a D in A-Level Law finally being useful for something

I'm decended from a templar knight and I really don't think its necessary to "restore the good name". If you pick up a book on the subject you'll see the history. And if you just want an apology, you don't sue for so much money. Especially since it's so long ago. If it were my father, sure, I'd go nuts because his wealth was seized and he was killed. But in reality, the templar is so far down ancestorial tree I don't feel the issue, seeing it was so long ago.

Holly: ????

lots of people are descended from templars: there were a lot of them and they got it on with a lot of people in their time????

1) I think it's probably bullshit
2) Saying "I'm decended from a templar knight and..." as though it validates your opinion makes me laugh. Even if it were true and someone generations back was a templar, it still means nothing now.

Not that I disagree, asking for money is dumb as well.

well whoever she's related to, it's probably better than my distant family bloodline: nothing but goat shepherds and poor farmers :(

I'm not kidding, as far back as i trace my family, that's all my family's ever amounted to ;(

I never said it validates my opionion, as that's just what it is, an OPINION. Oh and hey, I DID say that people who are decendents from so many generations ago deserve nothing because it means nothing. Learn to read.

This is just plain stupid. This is like descendants of slaves suing the U.S. governement for their ancestor's bondange. There is no point, it'll never win, and all is does is make some people go WTF!? On a side note, one of my ancestors was from an extinct midwestern Native American tribe. (No, I don't know which, nor do I care). Does that mean I have any legal right to sue for some of my ancestral tribal lands? No, because those went into the hands of others at least a century ago. Yes, the Vatican illegally ordered the wholesale slaughter of the Knights templar, but that was too long ago to matter to people now, except as a history lesson.

well if we go back in time and check what they did in Palestine, we'd notice that all the money they could get from the Vatican would end up in hands of Jews and some Christians and Muslims as well. Why? Because they were killed by the Templars then, especially when they took control over Jerusalem.
