Junk Art (Demo 0.7 added)

Early promotional picture, NOT title picture

Junk Art, or junkart, which I affectionately calls so, is an one-man amateur project that officially began on November 01, 2007. It is split into three parts - to make it easier for me to handle.

The game aims to be a not-so-serious, somewhat "over-the-top" rpg, loosely revolving around the premise of fine arts. Higher emphasis is placed on the characters, than rather on the story itself.

Further comments in regards to the game's aspect
Everything will take place strictly within Juno School grounds, but do not worry, for I plan to make the place big and filled with as much activities as possible.

The setting is reminisce to a late 19th century era, but is not meant to accurately mirror it. Another tidbit is that the story flows within the month of June, though no day/time system shall be used (story-relevance only).

There is also a personal deadline for part 1, which is to be due by February. I hope I can complete it by then, or else... -_-

Story

"Art forms the fundamental basic of this world. To abuse, or forsake art completely is to disrupt the very balance of the world. People, who do such, are labeled as 'Junk'."

Sent by the mysterious organization; "Avant Garde", Weiss Cavas infiltrates Juno Arts School in the form of a new student - to investigate a strange field of distortion, suspected to be caused by the presence of a significantly strong "Junk" nearby.
With the assistance of apprentice fairy Almond, Weiss shall find and eliminate the source of disturbance - all before the Junk turns his surroundings to a complete wasteland.

More about Junks
Former humans once accused by the ancient muses for dangerously corrupting the arts. Given the title "Junk", they and their descendants were thus cursed for generations to come. The Junks will gradually render all things around them "art-less", or states without the essence of art, until they themselves seek repentance and carry out a penance set by the high fairies.

Characters

for Part 1:
http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Dark_Koji/nameWeiss.jpg[/img]http://junkart.wikidot.com/local--files/weiss/Weiss1.png[/img]
Age: 22
Weapon: Brush Lance
Art Specialty: Watercolor Painting

The protagonist of Junk Art. A considerably tactful individual, Weiss appears to be easy-going and light-hearted in the eyes of many. In reality, he is unsocial and is extremely wary of others, even to those close to him. He intends to wrap this assignment up and leave the school compound as soon as possible.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Da ... Almond.jpg[/img]http://junkart.wikidot.com/local--files/weiss/Almond1.png[/img]
Age: 15
Weapon: n/a
Art Specialty: unknown (Floristry?)

An inexperienced young fairy dispatched by the high fairies to serve as a local guide and guardian for Avant Garde's Weiss. She is rude and shows hostility to humans, Weiss being no exception. It is truly a wonder why she was chose for the job in the first place.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Da ... eLesae.jpg[/img]http://junkart.wikidot.com/local--files/lesae/Lesae1[/img]
Age: 19
Weapon: Palette Sword
Art Specialty: Oil Painting

The first person to make acquaintance with Weiss in school. Lesae is a no-nonsense young man, with an air of arrogance around him. For some reason, he is interested in Weiss and regards him as a sort of rival. Lately, he has been suffering from a string of random headaches.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Da ... Quilti.jpg[/img]http://junkart.wikidot.com/local--files/quilti/Quilti1.png[/img]
Age: 20
Weapon: Whip Needle
Art Specialty: Clothing Needlework

A cheerful and outgoing lady who enjoys making up new clothing designs - even if the finished work usually leave something to be desired. Her frequent trips to the school's material room prompt several meetings with Weiss, whom she has gained a little of a friendly term with.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Da ... eMabre.jpg[/img]http://junkart.wikidot.com/local--files/mabre/Mabre1.png[/img]
Age: 20
Weapon: Scythe of Lettering
Art Specialty: Gothic Manuscript

Fellow classmate of Weiss, and close friends with Quilti as well. Others deem Mabre creepy due to her strange obsession with black and the subject on death. Disregarding that slight weirdness in her, she is in actuality an intelligent and respected student. On a side note, this young woman is infatuated with her homeroom lecturer Shu Fa, and does no attempt to hide it.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y66/Da ... eKraft.jpg[/img]http://junkart.wikidot.com/local--files/kraft/Kraft1.png[/img]
Age: 23
Weapon: Emerald Hammer
Art Specialty: Clay Sculpting

Final year student in the sculpture department, Kraft is actually undergoing his fourth term instead of the standard three years of study. Despite being presumably blind, his magnificent artisanship in clay molding has gained him the reputation as the "Saint of Clay". As with his feminine-like appearance, he carries a sense of gentleness and converses in a polite manner.

Demo 0.7

http://www.zshare.net/download/70330579dba6d5/
^let me know if the link doesn't work

This is the latest demo which comprise of very basic gameplay and an estimated total of 10-15min dialogue scenes. Majority stuff/quest have not yet been implemented/fixed, so play at your own risk.

(!!)To save, just find those teddy bears sprite which will open the save function. The bears are merely placeholders, until I make something suitable to replace.

*Author's notes: The game has been progressing in a very different direction than what I actually planned. Rather, I am completely not pleased with the current game so far.
Haiz... perhaps a complete scrap is at hand?

=========================================================

All in all, a big thank you for looking through my project.

Your game is much more ready for viewing than most other people that post their's here. For this, I applaud you.

One thing I gotta say, is that the story is different, but at the same time kind of reminds me of Okami (lack of art, lack of color). I'd like to see how this ends up working out.

A couple of little nitpicks though; when posting from Microsoft word, you have to go back and change your " and '. MS Word has a feature that makes them different, and the board doesn't recognize it. Also, your mapping is a little bare; make some of the rooms smaller, or put more details in to make up for it.

Can't wait to see more.

Thank you for the comments, Atemu. Gonna change those " asap.

In regards to the maps, actually all of them are already set to the smallest size (20x15). I guess I will have to push the walls even closer to one another, again LoL.

Adding more details for me is a tricky part. Like for the corridor, I already tried scattering a few paintings etc. over the place, but the end result looks weird. And judging from several renaissance interior, it seems like they don't put much stuff in their corridor as well, yet managed to still look majestic/pretty.
That, or I need better paintings tileset.

why the fuck doesnt this have more attention come on this project is interesting. this deserves so much more attention than the average final fantasy shit.

I love the idea that it revolves around art and the arts. And the fact that it doesn't feel overly anime, which is a syndrome that plagues way too many projects around here. This just generally feels more original and unique.

The screenshots are disappointing, I was expecting something a lot more interesting than the RTP. But the story and concept seems cool enough to keep it solid.

Thanks, Solid Bro. It is no big deal if this thread don't get much attention. Though I do need pointers for the maps to "re-create" a renaissance interior-feel, or close to that.

And truly dang, I forgot to mention that this game is generally RTP-styled.
It is definitely going to turn off many people, but I am placing my bets on the story/characters to make up for that... I hope. >_<

Edit: I am a little surprised that you mentioned it doesn't feel too anime-like. Actually, this whole rpg concept was indirectly inspired/influenced by my heavy exposure to anime. I guess the art theme makes it unique in a sense.

I never know what to say in project threads that don't suck, and I'm really at a loss for words in ones that are good, like this one.

The story, I think, could pass for either a very interesting anime, or one of those quirky, overlooked commercial RPGs.

I love how the character's weapons have the theme of their specialty art... thing... Will they have unique commands, as well? Or will they just have different spells? I'm hoping for the former! :D

I found all of the character's name puns, except for Lasae. What does his name have to do with oil panting? I would google it, but this adds more meat to my post! :D

Ohsht I thought this was a non game thread.. erm.. this is certainly more original than the games I've seen.. even mine. Junk Art, its definitely an interesting concept, good luck.

This is pretty much set for viewing, actually.

The story seems very creative, heck this project actually deserves more attention. :D

Keep up the good work, I'd love to see more.

Hmm... You mind sending me the map data for that map? I'll muck around with it a bit and show you what I mean.

Great concept and really refreshing one. Love the artwork and your character. Only thing is the map. Make them smaller and 'compact'. I also could help you if you want a mapper.

Whoa, nice to see so many new replies after coming back from work.

Yivyn: Keep Hero Rental going strong! ^^

BloodSpawn: Thank you~

Luminier: Glad you like the weapon part.
There won't be unique commands, but a wide assortment of skills exclusive to each character instead. Nearly all the skills will be exaggerated versions of existing art techniques.
E.g. Weiss's skill set are actual watercolor techniques: "Wet in Wet" (water element) & "Dry Brush" (earth element).

As for the 'hidden meaning' behind Lesae, try spelling his first name backwards. ;)

Brosek: Although I never commented in Legend of Harpine's topic, I have been secretly watching it for some time. Work on yours, and make it as awesome as you said it will be :thumb:

Ratty524: I will try my best, thanks~

Atemu: Sorry, I am unsure on what you mean by sending the Map Data. Will that specific data alone suffice, or do you need the related tileset too?

Impreza: I will put that in mind in regards to making the maps more compact. And also, thank you for offering your help, but I am striving to do this project independently. Though of course, any advices are still welcomed. :D

Yeah. Just do this: make a copy of the project, and delete everything but that map and the tileset that goes with it (and of course, the stuff in the data folder, but that's just a give-in). Then .rar it up and send it to me. ^_^

EDIT: Oh, and congrats on making it to the Projects in Development forum right away. <3

*Teary eyed* YOU DO CARE X)

I kinda cant do anything now though, which makes me kinda jittery.. *Creativity back up*

So I'll root for this project, to be the most original game on RMXP. *re-thumbs up*

The names are awesome. Has anyone else even mentioned that? They correspond with their art specialty and it's actually pretty ingenious the way you turned some of them into names.

I mentioned it, Prexus.

@Koji
How unique are the skills going to be? 'Cause I was imagining, something like Kraft making statues that fight for him, or something. Okay, maybe that was the only cool thing that I imagined... Will Quilti use buffing spells? Oh, oh! Will she sew up wounds? That would so kick-ass! :D

Edit: I forgot to mention this:
Projects in Development, already?! Way to go!

I was surprised myself when the project was moved over to the development board. Must have been sabao's doing... O_o

Atemu: Done as you have instructed and pm'ed you the file link.

Prexus: I was a little skeptical about the names initially, since they all sounded rather nonsensical (Quilti - a girl's name?!), though I guess it all worked out anyway.

Luminier: Sheesh... did Kraft's name easily leaked out his abilities as well? Indeed, he use little statues, or maquettes, to summon stuff. As for Quilti, she is like a support fighter. Her sewing techniques are more for killing than healing... XD

Whoahman.

It's stuff like this that compels me to put loads more thought into my project. As-is, it shouldn't ever see the light of day. Serious. ;._.

This has to be one of the most creative premises I've heard in a game, homemade or otherwise. I'm totally gonna keep an eye on this one. Can't wait until completion! You totally rock! :thumb:
