JD's art Dump

Hey everyone, I've decided to share the shit I've been working on. Me and my friend have been working on a webcomic/possible animated short series called The Roofies. The basic premise being three guys (John, Mel, & Dustin) Move into a new home in a crazy-ass neighborhood with all sorts of crazy motherfuckas. Feel free to look at them and tell me what you think! I'll also add other "art" that may not be associated with The Roofies here.

They look alright,
but you have these little circles on the legs - Knees I presume?
Well they're too tiny to be anything really, they detract from the image

Hmmm, I never really thought of the knees as being something that stood out, but I guess I can see your point. I'll try experimenting with different changing up the knees a bit with one of the next updates. Thanks for the input!

Give them different hairstyles. All their hair is black and spiky, it's too hard to distinguish them from one another. At least try out a different colour, because there's far too much resemblance between Mel and Dustin.

Unfortunately they're based on how we actually look; I am kinda' looking into changing up the faces a bit because I do see how they look similar. Damn us filipinos and out spiky hair!!!! >:O

okay sorry but i don't think it looks very good. they're essentially three of the same panel copy and pasted, it's not very pleasant to look at. the poses are stiff and look very awkward, especially the girl.

the font's not too pleasing either. it's too difficult to read, too squished, and not centered in the word balloons. lose the drop shadows on the text balloons, they look bad.

the colouring isn't bad (although a little flat) but all your lines are the same thickness. the thickness of the lines on the couch and all the outlines are the same. expressive comics have varying line thickness to accent certain objects over others, to make them pop. the problem is you pretty much need a tablet that has pen pressure enabled, and i don't know what kind of hardware you have.

and what's up with the background? it's one shade of purple with some dodge and burn applied. backgrounds don't have to be detailed but when it's one giant purple splotch it comes off as uninspired and boring.

jd i want to like it but it's far too similar to almost every other webcomic ever :(

man i kind of feel bad! just keep these kind of pointers in mind, i guess, and keep practicing.

Very good criticisms here; don't feel bad, it helps me learn y'know? I'm still learning how to use my Wacom tablet, but I definitely see how different pressure of lines could help the art drastically. In a sense, however, I kinda' want it to be similar to other webcomics so it's sort of a double edged sword. I appreciate the input truly.

As far as I'm concerned this is one of the only "lol twilight" comics I've laughed at. :toot:

Anyway, I have to echo all of Dev's sentiments. It's a ton of wordswordswords for a weak punchline that's been done to death - basically, a Twilight joke as told by CTRL+ALT+DEL. Don't, don't, don't do the "smug pseudo-copypasted talking heads discussing various aspects of videogames and/or pop culture in front of a blank and/or GIS'd and blurred background" thing. You're way better than that.

I'm forced to agree that Twilight jokes are incredibly overplayed. We all know how creepy, sexist, poorly written, etc. it is by now. One additional criticism that hasn't been discussed too in-depth is the shading. I think you'd benefit from more contrast and a bit of hue variation between the shadows and highlights. Using low-contrast colors is going to make it look soft and puffy; you want it to be sharp and clear. Also, the way you've done the hair makes it look flat. Try adding more volume with some shadows instead of just having the pale band all the way across.
