Is this possible?

Okay, so we all now how tiresome, overwhelming, and difficult high school can be, right? (Well, most of us. BTW, why do I start all my threads with "Okay"?) I'm going to be a Junior soon, in three days to be exact, and I was thinking that I have two more years of hell...until I go into MORE hell. I was wondering if it's possible to just take a year off of school after high school and then start college afterward? Would there be any consequences? I've asked a few people this question and each of them said different things. Some said that it was possible, but wouldn't be a good idea because some colleges would consider it lackadaisical.

So I'm asking you guys, because I need more answers.

but the only people who do it are those rich ass Hairy Potter Stars with 10 million pounds in the bank.
???

I know a few people that have done this. Most people take a year off after high school to work at a job while living with their parents to make some money for university. Some people finish high school when they're only 17 and that's very young to be attending postsecondary school so taking a year off and working for money is a pretty good idea. As long as you're not wasting it and are working, that is.

i did it. then it turned into like 4 years. i tried going back to school at 22, but there were complications, had to drop, and now it's been 7 years and I still don't have a degree. it works out for some people but taking time off between hs and college didn't for me. you get into the working world, you get money, you get promotions, you get better jobs, you get cars, you get property, you get debt, and then suddenly it's really hard to go back to school and almost impossible to get scholarships. sucks. i'll go back eventually. hopefully.

on the flip side though, you go through the bottom rungs of the office world, and suddenly you appreciate school a hell of a lot more.

Awesome Bro

it works but a lot of people who end up taking a year off never go back to school... like the find a good job already and what not. Ive tooken 2 years off... still want to go but i doubt it will happen lol

The Uni will want your high school dates. They'll then want to know why you took a gap year and what you were doing on that gap year. "I did a job and learnt some skills" works well. "I was in Africa working with poorfolk" works well. "I did nothing and lazed about on my arse for a whole year" will not.

Honestly, either go to Uni or get a job.

A huge quantity of people go to university and end up dropping out because they realize it isn't for them.

You could take a year off, then decide you really want to go back and do so, or decide you're happy just working and stay out of the education system.

Or you could go to school right away and be probably almost as likely to decide it isn't for you, but be too late and already out several thousand dollars on a year of school.

This is an individual decision. Lots of people take gap years and turn out just fine. If you want a year off, just do it.

Probably a quarter of the folks I know have wasted thousands of dollars jumping into university then dropping out and doing something else, or getting into it and jumping around from major to major for a year or four. IMHO they'd have been better off taking a year off to figure out what the balls they want to do rather than jumping in and making money wasting reconsiderations later.

I'm just finishing up a year out between A levels and university. There's nothing wrong with it, it's a good chance to save up some money for uni, or save for half the year and go travelling the rest. Me? I claimed job seekers and smoked weed for a year. Not particularly beneficial in any way but I feel a lot more geared up to actually do something at uni, as otherwise I'd have spent my first year at uni on my ass smoking instead of working/being out and enjoying shit.

No idea about US colleges, but if they discriminate against 18 year olds who are unsure of their future then you don't wanna study there anyway mate.

I wanted to take a year off, make sure I knew what degree I wanted. But the costs of tuition is always going up. I took college credit courses in highschool which transfer and saved me time and money. I'll finish this December.

It's funny, I have a twin sister who got all these scholarships from different places while I got nothing. She ended up waiting a year instead of me. We're always competing and bragging about who does what first.

I've also been thinking about the fact that I might lose the momentum, as somewhat stated by Mega Flare. I probably won't feel the urge anymore and probably give myself too much freedom. If I do end up taking a year off after HS, it will be most likely spent working, thinking about what I actually want to do in college, and probably getting my own place.
