IRC blocked

So like, up until a few days ago, connecting to IRC from school has not been a problem, but I think one of the monitors finally caught on and blocked the java applet I've been using to connect.

Outside of getting a client (if there is no other way I'll start bringing one on a flash drive or something) what can I do to circumvent the block?

This is vague, I know. I really don't know the nature of the block at all, other than it seems to work by jsut flat out stopping me from connecting to the server. I just figured that if this was a generic problem, there might be a simple solution. :P

So um, help?

You can :

1. Tunnel your way around the problem. Most networks will leave port 20, 21, 22, 23 and 80 (and sometimes 8080) open for public use; just try SSH tunneling or HTTP tunneling, though SSH is easier and more recommended. If you know of anyone with an SSH server that you could use, I'll explain further how to tunnel past to use IRC.

2. Use a proxy. Using a proxy will circumvent any "blocked" ports, so that the usual IRC ports (6667, etc.) will be available through the proxy (which you access through port 80).

3. If it IS indeed the Java Applet which is disabled (i.e. : permission denied to run applets), then just get an IRC client, like xChat or mIRC or ChatZilla.

Hey, I have to circumvent port blocks at work to use IRC, and I have valid reasons not to be working; my code is compiling.

So perhaps he has valid reasons too?

Dude, you go to school to work and learn, not to goof off doing things you can do in your own spare time...

Is this really your call to make? We've got a brother down in enemy territory getting bored to death, man! We don't have time to listen to after-school specials! Lock and load, men, we gotta help this poor sunuvabitch! Yee-haw!

I get on the computer at school because I finish my work nearly twenty minutes before the rest of my classmates and I'm bored. ;_________;

Yeah, I'm in the same boat as Arrow, we're just flat out smarter than everyone and would rather spend our free time talking and hanging out in a chat room with you guys than playing with ourselves in the back of class(Yeah, one kid did that in my class in 8th grade when he was bored).

Actually, he's got a valid point.
Some students, whether it's because they work harder or they're just smarter and faster than the rest of their classmates, finish work far before other students in their class. After finishing what they have to do, maybe along with all their homework, and the class's homework for the next day, why shouldn't these students be allowed to relax in the 15 or 20 minutes left in the day?
Then again, I might be biased, being part of that group of students.

Dude I always mess around in ICT if I'm not on msn secretly then I'm talking to my friends, but I always get the work done =D

There's loads of ways to bypass the school filters! I found and done them all XD

Try what shadow suggested, and if it doesn't, we'll try SSH tunneling. It's easier, faster and more secure, but of course requires a server at the end which allows you to create SOCKS.
