Mankind's dominance of Earth had been a sturdy absolution in their eyes, but they had become blinded by their idea of power. In the grand scheme of the universe, humans are fickle weak beings whose only strength is in their courage and determination... but those traits alone were naught but laughable in the face of the doomsday they never asked for. In the face of the one they call Maw. The Mayan Calendar which ends on the 21st of December of 2012 was indeed a timer to foretell the arrival of this frigid gaseous apocalypse.
Maw relentlessly attacked mankind, destroying all it had labored to build... it had become clear that this god-sent gift was too powerful for mankind, no one was worthy of opposition. Before mankind could be snuffed forever, an unusual character came to them, cloaked from head to toe, introducing himself only as: The Messenger.
Under the messenger's guidance, humanity was able to flee the frozen terror and escape to another world they would call hope, with only a billion humans remaining... the era of mankind's domination had ended.
But as one dominant species should fall, another shall rise to take its place. The Aspect of Magic chose the human's domesticated pets as the new vassals to which the land would be in servitude. They had their instincts intact, but were no longer savages due to humanity's greatest gift, compassion. They had been given the intelligence as humans had in the blink of an eye. By the time our tale takes place, 90 years have passed since Maw's rampage began.
Maw similarly attacked the new dominant species, but was sealed away by a combined effort, the Frostlord trading in one prison for another.
But a prison is not built to last, and only 30 years after his seal was placed, it would yet again be broken... now it falls to the next generation to deal with the threat sealed away only 30 years before.
And this is where our unlikely heroes enter the fold.
