How does geometry influence video games? I am doing a research project and I need help getting started. I want to know how geometry influences video games like super Mario. For example: why is it that there are mystery boxes in Mario rather than something else. If anyone also knows where I can contact a video game developer so I can ask these questions, that would be awesome!

It's a bit of a strange question. One would assume the mystery boxes are there to add another element to the game, another whole level of thinking. Rather than just getting to the end of the level, there's the extra points and powerup to be found too, to make the game more interesting.
If you're talking about why they chose a box graphic, it's probably because it's the first thing that would come to mind.
If you needed a way of dispensing a powerup, chuck it in a box. If it has a chance to drop something else, slap a question mark on it to highlight the random possibility. The square shape also fits well with the strong geometric characteristics of the levels and the graphics themselves. Also, due to the fact that they are stand alone boxes, and nothing environment specific, they can be put with any level and they fit the environment, saving graphic space.
