I'm new. Need help!

Hello everyone. My name is Nick and I am new to RPG maker. I've managed to cover some aspects of using RPG maker, but I still need some help. I'm not sure where to look in finding out how to do sprite cutting and converting them to RPG maker XP. This is the first thing I want to do because I don't really like any of the preset graphics, battle animation, sounds etc. Everything from the tilesets, to the sound effects is way too midaevil-themed (Understandibly) and I want to lean away from it. I want to change everything from a midaevil theme to a Sci-fi theme. Before I even get started, I want to get as many sprites, tilesets, and audio bits as I can. At the same time I need to learn how to convert all of it into the program.

Can someone please point me in the right direction so I can get started? I know there's a tutorial section here but I'm not sure wich ones cover sprite conversion.

Ultimately, and more specifically, I want to make a Star Wars based RPG. It seems that it's never really been done before (At least not oficially.) KOTOR and SWG are vague exceptions, but I want to make something with the traditional turn-based adventure game we all grew up with  :). So I need SW sprites, tiles, and SFX for this project. They don't necessarily have to be star wars, just as long as they look futuristic.

Start with "Help -> Contents -> RPG Maker XP -> Material Specifications"
This gives you a pretty decent description of all of the resources.
HINT: Don't use .jpg for anything other than Panoramas, Titles, Gameovers, or Pictures.

The description for "Import" is pretty weak.
HINT: you only need to use the Import function if your image doesn't have an "Alpha" channel. Import will add an alpha channel, and change one specific color (you choose) to transparent. And another color to semi-transparent (50% gray).  If your image already has transparency, just copy it to the appropriate game\Graphics\... folder.

You should get a pretty good idea of how the files are constructed by opening some of the example files that come with the RTP (C:\Program Files\Common Files\Enterbrain\RGSS\Standard\Graphics)

Hm... I really don't know how to help you if you want a star wars game... but download KNight Blade: Howling of Kerberos from over here.

That'll provide you with some Sci-Fi styled Tilesets.

Thank you for linking me to that game. I downloaded it and I thought it was excellent. I played it, and afterwards I ripped some of the graphics for my SW folder. I was wondering, has anyone on this site made a complete downloadable Star Wars RPG? If so I'd be excited to play it. If not, any other sci-fi's you'd recommend?

Good luck with the SW theme. I've been working on one forever now, and finaly had to give up because I couldn't locate good tiles or hire a spriter . Characters are no problem check out sithjesters site - http://www.untamed.wild-refuge.net/rmxpresources.php?characters

Ultimatly you need to look in tutorials. That will tell you how to import resources.

Thank you. I've gotten all the sprites I need from that site already. I there any other source you'd reccommend for tilesets, SFX, other graphics?

You know, I just figured out I can use any sprite sheet from sithjester, but the other stuff I find like on google won't work. I'm guessing character sprite sheets have to be in specific format in order to work with RPGXP. What I need then is to download the program that can edit and customize sprites and sprite sheets specifically for RPG XP. If you know of the program I'm talking about, could you hotlink it to me? I'd appreciate it.

Also, I will take a good look into the forum index for more information. Thanks alot guys!

Yes, they need to be in a specific format.

[flame ON] RTFM! [flame OFF]  :scruff:

Seriously, in RPG Maker XP, on the main menu,  select Help -> Contents
There are 2 sections "RPG Maker XP", and "RGSS Reference Manual"
Read the first section. All of it! It's not that much reading, and it will answer a lot of questions.
In particular, the "Material Specifications" page will describe the format for all of the graphics.

There is no program that will automatically reformat a sprite sheet to work with RMXP.
You'll need a graphics / image editor (I use MSPaint, MS Photo Editor, and GIMP.)
Then you can use cut/paste to rearrange a spriteset (character set) to work in RMXP.

If you have a specific resource in mind, post a link to it, and I (or someone) will show you how to modify it.

Be Well

I need a droideka sprite sheet. I found one by someone named "Tani" but it's not formatted correctly. I tried using a program called "paint.net" to format, but having trouble doing it. Does anyone have any droideka sprites? Also, battledroid sprites would be helpful too...
