I'm going to draw something

I've never really drawn anything before, but I understand a lot of concepts so i'm going to draw something.

I want as much help as possible with this one, I'm going to be posting each stage of the drawing here and if you guys can tell me what's wrong/needs changing that would be awesome.

First thing's first, the pose;

Critique please!

I think it looks pretty good since you never really drawn anything. I don't know if you did this on purpose or not but try to straighten the lines a little bit they're a bit sketchy. I have trouble with this too sometimes so don't feel bad. Other than that it looks good. Keep drawing until you get it the way you want it. :)

I always do sketchy, it's because I'm not confident at all, so what I do is I rub a direction and then use the eraser to correct where things look wrong.

Here's what I have now;

  • Reduce breasts so it is nude
  • Increased size of right hand
  • Fixed nobbly elbow
  • Increased thickness of neck
  • Cleaned up legs

And I've tried adding clothes, hair and eyes for an anime-style school girl outfit;

The eyes are totally shit, don't know what to do with them.
The right sleeve is also a bit crazy.

EDIT: Update again

  • Defined more lines
  • Fixed sleeves
  • Lengthened fingers
  • Removed hair from right shoulder (Logically too long)
  • Changed angle of right leg

I also did a test of the inking phase, it looked good but was a difficult procedure to carry through.

I'm not sure if it's the perspective or lack of shading yet but I can't picture how her left elbow is bent. The kink doesn't make sense to me. I'm sure it's just a trick of the lines though.

Hands look great but the fingers all seem the same length, pinky and index could do with being a tiny bit shorter to get the shape.

I'm not an artist though and wouldn't know what to do with the eyes.

I'll redo that bend. Fingers are the worst thing for me, can't ever get them right, I'll tuck the pinky behind the ring finger and shorten the index a tad.

I started doing some simple shading to try and communicate depth, I won't post that until I fix the pose though (I've already tried inking, so I've gone a tad too far already)

Draw it again. lol.
I know it's not what you want to hear. And it really depends on who you are. Some people will draw it again better, if not faster, the second or third time. But then there are people who will draw it exactly the same way.
I had instructors that used to say something like, it takes 100 bad drawings to make 1 good one.

I don't know how long you've spent on it already. But in the long run it might be better if you redraw the whole thing every time you work on it. Which isn't that different from erasing portions that you want to fix. It's not excessively detailed. Eventually you get to the point where you can draw her legs in a single stroke and not waste time with a hundred hairy sketch marks that you'll only have to erase later.

Oh don't get me wrong, I didn't spend much time at all inking, it only took 2 minutes, I'd rather delete that and go back and correct the pose than suffer from a weird angle, I was trying to say that I've already been tempted to rush ahead without critique.

This is what I have now;

  • Moved left arm
  • Shrunk right index finger
  • Thinned right pinky finger
  • Added wrist to left hand to better show angle

The day I can do a smooth freehand curve is the day I am cured of dyspraxia :U
Until then I'll be doing rough strokes I'm afraid.

Awesome Bro

She is one jacked chick. The muscle proportions are the only thing that is bothering me.

And the stretched out hand...The ring middle and index look like they are all individual appendages separate from the hand. Simply erasing a line or two.

The elbow on the arm going behind the head looks a little funny too.

All in all, wayyy better than anything I could have drawn.

Is she playing with her hair or supporting her head? If plating then, judging by my gown hair play technique, you'd want to relax the wrist a bit since it looks like it's attempting to wrap around something.

I just ran my fingers through my hair in that pose right now to better describe what I mean (and felt wrong doing it) and what I found was that my knuckles and hand were perfectly aligned with my forearm with only my fingers curved. With that, my elbow was facing a lot more to the left than hers is, the same being tire for holding my head.

Right now her left arm looks like it's running right across her mouth and nose. If she's holding her head, then her hand needs to be touching her scalp and her elbow needs to come up a little (and off her face).

Playing with hair, I'll open up the hand then, it does look awkward indeed.

The muscles I'm having difficulty with, not so good at lean elegance. I'll thin down and debulge the limbs
