Igor Almighty (retro platformer)

Took the opportunity to register here to enter this sweet contest. So, hello everyone!

My game entry is called Igor Almighty, and is a heavily Castlevania-inspired platformer, which will be designed to appear like an actual NES-game.

Updates:
March 27th
Work continues and I'm almost through with the basement level (see new screenshot below). Again I have to renew my concerns regarding the deadline. Hopefully I will be able to tie this together last minute to appear like a remotely complete game.

March 23rd
The deadline is drawing close and honestly I still do have a load of work to do on this. I'm afraid I can't be sure if I will make it. On the positive side I shall mention that there are the famous stairs from Castlevania now added to the game, which actually add surprisingly much to the proper retro atmosphere.

Also there is a save-point system in place now, which is a more modern touch, as this obviously didn't exist in the original NES titles. I think it's a good way to deliver a still challenging game, while managing the player's frustration, hehe.

March 15th
After having done some additional work on the hud and scrolling, I noticed that over a third of the available 100 events are already used up. Seems like the limitations of this contest will make it fairly tricky to fit everything within that tiny scope.

Meanwhile I'm still polishing the cave stage. In case you're wondering here's the different stages that are planned:
Wilderness -> Cave -> Basement -> Hallways - > Tower.

March 13th
Juggled around with some sprites today. Mainly added the tiles for the wilderness setting (see screenshot below). Have to increase my creative output in the next few days to get more stuff done.

Story: Betrayed by his once loyal henchman Igor and left for dead, Dr. Frankenstein must make his way back to reclaim his castle, take revenge for the brutal murder of his daughter and end the evil masterplan of Igor once and for all.

Features:

  • - horror theme :boo:
    - 8bit retro style graphics
    - hardcore platformer action
    - multiple weapons
    - boss fights

I think that might be all I have to say for now. Here's hoping I'll get this baby off the ground and bring some joy to those who still cherish a bit of retro gaming. Cheers!

How far ahead is your game? What systems are currently working?
Mostly I have finished the animation system and sprites for the player character, for the most part at least. Currently I'm mainly working on the hud, inventory and general level design. Need to cut down what is planned on paper by at least 50% to begin with, or else I'm not likely to make the deadline. But it's really a big mess of working on everything a little right now tbh.

Will be adding little progress updates to the original post soon.

More importantly, did you make ALL those graphics yourself?
Yes, all the graphics used in this game are original and created by myself.

OK, You can be impressed with P.R.'s work... cause it is awesome.

but if you honestly believe my art is good... (Insert Facepalm here)
I'm...sorry?

Anyways, PR, how much are you exactly planning to cut out?

Thanks for the kind words everyone!
Started updating the first post now with my progress, btw.

Also it seems like Eventing_Guy needs to learn how to take a compliment.

Well, instead of the game offering multiple paths you can explore, it's gonna be a rather linear affair, apart from a tiny bit of backtracking which will probably still be involved. It's just necessary to keep the game smaller and get it done in this small timeframe. But that's about the biggest cut I'm making.

This is gorgeous; I'm itching to see an update on it. Also don't forget to give me a userbar so I can add it to my sig
(See the "HYPE! ..." thread, linked at the top of this page.)

Congratulations. This looks very promising. How fare are you from getting finished? Really,
because I can't wait to play this game.
Thank you! Finishing this before the deadline will be a tough cookie indeed. There's still so much to do, I'm trying to stay optimistic. Wish me luck.

I still can't get over how awesome the visuals are. You're pretty talented with pixels, PR!

My eyesight isn't so great that I can see the teeny sprites super well, however ... If I zoom in using my browser's zoom function, will it still play and look normal? I wouldn't want to screw up the experience. I only ask because I can't test it for myself without a demo up, haha.

Thanks Venetia! And don't you worry, the actual window resolution is double the size of those screens, so it should play okay even on bigger resolutions and go easier on everyone's eyesight, hehe.

Sorry to tell you guys that I won't be entering the contest after all. Igor Almighty just was the wrong project to do within the limitations of the contest. I do definitely require more than 100 events to finish the game in a proper way. Also more time won't hurt either, hehe.

You can still keep an eye out for Igor Almighty to be released in April (most likely).

So yeah, thank you to HBgames. The contest was a good reason to get started on a project again. And best of luck to all entrants. I've seen some very nice projects cooking here, keep it up!
