I use Anvil Studio, www.anvilstudio.com, which is okay. However, it's not a loop program like Acid or Audacity; you actually have to place every note. The two problems I've had is that it won't let you change tempos and its drums aren't all that good. Other than that, though, it's pretty easy to make midis and you can even open up other midis and mess around with them. I've enjoyed it.

If you just want to fuck around, I'd suggest Finale Notepad. But you'll find that nearly all free programs suck.

jesus christ i haaaaaaaate threads like this.

music is very expensive, and a general rule of thumb is "you don't really get what you pay for unless it's free". what this means is, there's a lot of really really good stuff that's pretty cheap overall and there's a lot of really really bad stuff that's HORRENDOUSLY EXPENSIVE and there's no real standard, but regardless of how much they are and what they do they are generally waaaaaaaaaay better than anything free.

tl;dr almost everything free sucks REALLY BAD. but of course if you don't care about quality then get anvil or the fl studio demo or something.
