I have a question...

Okay, so I am applying for several scholarship that I have been looking into for college, and I have hit a slight snag...

I am creating a slideshow displaying various pictures and works of art that I have created, along with a few of my 3D renders, and stuff like that.

I will be making a DVD, about 10 minutes long and I would like to put music to it.

That is my problem... I am not sure if I can use music from other copyrighted artists.

I am looking at useing some of the pirates of the carribean, or Lord of the rings movies, and maybe a few others that are similiar.

Anyways, I am not sure what the laws are exactley on the usage on those music pieces...

I have looked on google for a website that could tell me this answer, but I cant seem to find any...

Actually, I have found many, but each one is a little different from the rest, and do not sound like the legit truth.

About my project, it is about 10 minutes long, it has a bunch of images, and a few motion clips that I have created. I will be sending this to the people that I am applying for a scholarship for and will be using this for my college art portfolio. I will not be making any money off of this, and I would give credit afterwards at the end of the movie (the song name, the artist, the album, the date recorded, and the recording studios info will be on that)

So, can anyone help me out with this problem?

Thanks!

email/write a letter to the copyright holder? say like HEY CAN I USE YOUR TUNEZ FOR A SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION. i'm not entirely sure how the copyright for film scores and shit works but it's probably held by the composer.

My copyright thread, where you can ask these questions:

Whomever pays for the music (i.e. a record label) has rights to the music and you must ask them for permission.

However, if you are not redistributing the music (i.e. only you and your college panel will see it), you can use it, so long as you add their copyright information in your credits.

College panels (especially for creative scholars) generally look down upon using widely-popularized music, so I'd advise against it anyway.
