How long does it take to learn to script?

Hello,

I'm am very new into rpg maker. I know really nothing about it (well i do a bit but not alot xD) and nothing about making scripts for it. My question here is... How long will it take for me to learn it? I know that this depends on how long i'm on it.

It can take anywhere from a few months to a few years to actually master the RGSS script feature for RMXP/RMVX. If you are really dedicated, and want to learn it, start NOW! You'd be surprised the type of features you can put into your game will some excellent scripts. Me, personally, I still have a ways to go, but I'm taking Programming in school so hopefully that may help me a little. Check out some of the tutorials in this site, like I do.

As mentioned by Zalcanthrias, the time needed for you to master the program can vary. Dedication, how much time you spend learning and how effecient you are.

For instance, I started with RPG Maker in 2005. I had quite a bit of pauses in between then and now, and I still don't master every aspect of the application.

Let me recommend that you make games to improve. Don't make samples to accomplish this and that. Plan a game that you feel is within your reach and add components as you go. You will improve a lot this way. Usually, one's first game is never completed, or at least not something one's too happy with. If you get stuck with something, ask for help. So basically, you improve on the way, getting answers to simple questions, instead of going for the big bunch from the very beginning.

And yes, simple scripts can be made if you understand the basics, but I reckon that understanding the program to the fullest would be smart before moving onto scripts. This way you can understand all the data files and classes much easier.

I hope stuff works out for you, and if you ever need any help, you know where to post ^_^

Ok tnx I will :)

I have a little idea of what i'm going to do... It will be very basic but only for learning lol. I'm sure that in the future you will see me alot on this forum hehe.

Just make sure you learn switches before posting any help topics. Switches is vital to every (at least almost every) RPG Maker game, so make sure you know what they're all about.

That's just one way to use switches. Switches can be used for a lot of things. Also, bear in mind that Self Switches are very useful if the switch is not supposed to affect anything else than that specific event. It makes your switch list less crowded.

Yea I was planning to do this but I don't master the program itself yet. So isn't it better to first learn everything about rpgxp before making scripts?

Absolutely! I was just saying, if you want to get the most out of the scripting feature, take advantage of the RXMP website. There's a lot of good talent attached to this website that can inspire unique ideas.
