How can I make ingame variable peform functions in script-form?

I am having trouble getting in game Variables to perfom operations like add and multiply, when I insert text like this " $game_variable[63] = 81 "  I get this Error "undefined method'[]=' for nil:NilClass" Do I need a seperate class to do these processes or do I just need to include additional text to prepare for these processes?

It's because it is $game_variables[63]. It's plural, not singular. Hope that answers your question.
