I stumbled in here through Google, looking for some code to deal with RPG Maker's .XYZ image format, and it looks like quite a nice community you guys have got here, so I figured I'd make an account and introduce myself.
I'm Mason Wheeler, the creator and sole contributor (so far, at least) to the open-source TURBU project, a "clone-plus" of RPG Maker 2000/2003 with more features, less limitations and real scripting. I've always enjoyed playing around with RPG Maker, but one day I was working on a project as a scripter and I needed some stuff that its event system just couldn't handle in any intuitive way. After looking at it a little, I decided "I can build something better than this."
Famous last words. I've been at it for about 4 years now, in my spare time (in the meantime I was going to school, getting out of school, and then working full-time as a computer programmer) and the editor is just now approaching a solid, usable state. I've got a bunch of code still sitting around from my first attempt to clone the RPG Maker engine, which took up most of the first year. It almost worked, mostly, and now that I know what I'm doing I'm gradually re-integrating and adapting parts of it into the real TURBU engine.
Not sure when it'll be done, but I'm making continual progress and I've got a few authors of large RPG Maker projects interested in converting over to the TURBU engine once it's further along. (A project importer is one of the first things I built for the editor!)
Anyhoo, this looks like a nice place, and I think I'll hang out a little and check out some of the projects y'all are working on.
