Hey guys, I want a gun

Ok, so here's the sitch. I want to get a gun. It will be my first gun that doesn't fire pellets by means of air propulsion. I would like to know what would be, in your opinions, the best gun as a starter. I know that there's atleast one person on these forums with firearm experience, and hopefully they could help me out on this.
The reasons I want a firearm:

*I like to hunt small game, like pigeons, ducks, possums, etc.
*I like to target-shoot at ranges.
*Plinking, or in laymens terms, shooting junk for practice.
*Defense in an apocalyptic situation (not really that important, but I am pro-survivalist).

Another thing, does anyone know any Chilean Firearms laws? I've been looking all over, can't find anything more than Plaza de Armas, Chile.
Thanks a lot!

I'm not gonna pretend I'm anywhere near as good a gun expert as most other folks, but I'd suggest starting with a 9mm. It's not as dangerous as the .45 (which I've heard can take someone's arm off if you aim it just right.) You also should probably look into a semi-automatic handgun. Though I'd say you're probably best going to your local gunshop and asking the owner what he or she thinks would be best for your needs.

You should always ask your local arms dealer because they can also help you with the local laws, and may have firearm modification kits or whatnot.  Things such as scopes, or those attachable butts.  I dunno what they're called, I'm not big into firearms, I don't own one (though I did shoot an at the time girlfriend by accident :x).

But he or she will definitely be able to help you.

9mm, huh? I was thinking more of a rifle than a pistol, but I wouldn't say no to a SA pistol. Problem I have with them is that most times, many civilian pistols are known to have feeding or jamming problems, and it is a firearms fact that most gunfights end within 5 shots or less. Keeping this in light, I was thinking of getting a snub-nose .38 special, or a Walther P22.
As for your advice mister...chimp porn(?), I've asked several firearms dealerships. NZ isn't to big on handguns, we're more into rifles and shotguns than pistols, though that's not to say that we don't have clubs and stuff. Two places I went to had referred me to a Remington 870, a ruger 10/22 or a bolt action from Remington that I can't remember. Pistols can't be purchased by normal standards, you need to get an endorsement to buy them, and the only way to get an endorsement is to join a Pistol Club, or get a collectors endorsement, and I have neither, so...
On the bright side, I can get those C02 steel bb pistols. Anyone got any suggestions?

Your best bet is a semi-automatic rifle chambered in .22 Long Rifle. As your ar upgrading from an air rifle, you probably have little experience handling recoil, and the .22 is such a light round that, in a rifle, it produces negligible amounts of recoil. It is also a highly accurate and low cost round (In some places, a 500 round case (10 boxes containing 50 rounds each) costs less than one box of 9mm or .45 caliber, both of which are of paramount importance to a recreational shooter. It is also among the least regulated round, as the low stopping power makes it very difficult to murder someone with it. Also, both pistols and rifles are chambered in this round, allowing out to get comfortable with both types of weapon. Do NOT purchase a snub-nosed pistol of any caliber, as those are only accurate within 5-10 meters.
