Help making a good puzzle

Description of puzzle: When you enter the room you go into this maze that takes you to a nearby switch...when you press it the puzzle begins (and the puzzle music from Metroid Prime 2 plays, lol). You are in this big maze where at the end where the exit is, is blocked by five colored flames. There are five switches, where if you press one that matches the color of the flame...the flame will go out, but another same colored flame will appear somewhere in the maze...making it harder to reach the others...and that's the puzzle. Somehow get rid of the five blocking flames in the maze, when all five are out the puzzle is done and the other five flames will automatically go out.

I'm posting a pic so you guys know what the maze looks like and where the five switches are...(yay Fireworks, lol...if the switches need to be moved, we'll work something out)

1: Switch number one, this will be the first switch that will start it all...for right now this switch works with the red fire.

2: Switch 2, you decide which color.

3: Switch 3, same as above...

4: Switch 4, same as above...

5: Switch 5, same as above...

6: The five blocking flames, red, green, blue, purple, and yellow. When one of these colored flames go out, another same colored one will pop up in the maze. I thought it miht be better for you guys to decide where they pop up though.

If you need any more explanation let me know, but Iwant to see if I can make this time consuming. (all the puzzles I created before were too easy)

Thanks.

EDIT: And yes I'm going to be playing around with this too, lol.

My advice would be to center the idea on the order that the switches need to be pressed (for example, rather than 1,2,3,4,5, you might have to do them in 3,4,2,1,5)- if each switch "moves" the flame from in front of the door to a certain spot in the maze, then the solution would be found by pressing switches before you block access to them.

(additionally, is that the final map?)

Right?

O.o What SB said is basicly what you need to do..Not where you can pick what color..Or are you wanting help on how to do it?

And what if they dont press number one switch? Could they just go right through it?

SB's logic is right on. Look at the solution backwards.
Create the puzzle so that if they are pressed in the right order,
you block a switch that's already been pressed.
So, if your order is 1,2,3,4,5, switch 2 blocks switch 1,
switch 3 blocks switch 2, 4 blocks 3, and 5 blocks 4.

I don't understand why you want switch 1 to start the puzzle though. I can be "started" when you enter the room. In which case you probably want to move switch 1 or swap it with one of the other switches. The player will instinctively hit the closest switch first.

Make it a little more challenging by starting with Switch 3 & 5 in the ON position, so 2 & 4 are blocked. So now they have to hit
3,5,1,2,3,4,5 OR 5,3,1,2,3,4,5

Since 1 doesn't block anything, you can still have it turn off a flame by the exit, and turn one on in a place that doesn't block the other switches.

See if that helps

Be Well

maybe something like this:
http://img57.imageshack.us/img57/4786/mapgf0.png[/img]
1= red
2= dark blue
3= light blue
4= purple
5= green

you start with the flames (lines) with the black dots, if you use the switch, the black one goes away and the white appears, if you use the switch again the black ones appear and the white one go away. you can go to 6 when all flames are burning

HOW TO SOLVE
go to 1, go to 3, go to 1, go to 4, go to 1, go to 3, go to 1, go to 4, go to 5, go to 2, go to 4, go to 1, go to 3, go to 6!!!!! :P
