Hello from a lurker

Hi there,

I've been lurking this forum along with other RPG maker communities in search for the origin of character sprite templates, particularly the legendary HKCP. I finally gave in and registered because the HKCP gallery is down and Venetia didn't respond to my email. Assuming that she doesn't check her pixelcocktail email anymore, I signed up to contact her via forum PM.

But since I'm here now, may as well say hi!

First, I'm not a game creator at all, just an enthusiast who's considering messing with her own game as a hobby, nothing serious. I have a lot of stories to tell, and I figured it would be more fun for me to try telling them in the form of a game instead of the traditional wall-of-text. That leads me to the need of character spriting which is the primary reason why I've been looking for a character template to work with. I'm really fond of the HKCP character templates due to the details, but I also want to have a "go ahead" from the original creators before I dive in.

Other than that, I'm a full time worker and part time college student studying IT, with a bit of knowledge in web development. I draw, sing and write as my hobby, even though I do none of these things professionally.

I haven't used any of the resources from you guys yet but I want to thank you all now for providing me months worth of research and reading materials about spriting and 2d game making in general.

Also if any of you know of an effective way to contact the HKCP people, please let me know, because I would really like to use HKCP resources for my hobby game making!

Cheers,
Rosareven

Hi there. I don't know too much about the HKCP people, but I know Venetia was a big part of it and she's still very much around here. As is coyotecraft. I'm sure Ven will see this at some point but if not just drop her a PM. :)

We should really try and get the HKCP going again as a more public thing, it could be great. Just a board where people can work together to make HK sprites and such.

Greets, bro.

I've just started learning some pixel art myself and I'm working with HKCP to start. If you're needing the templates, I have the male and female ones on my PC if you need them.

Hi!

I never check my pixelcocktail address anymore. Just got your PM; yes it's fine to use whatever you find with your hobby game. I appreciate your graciousness in asking.

It's a real shame we didn't do more with all of it ... I unfortunately ran out of gas :(.

Welcome to the forums, anyway :D

Yeah, making a set of custom graphics sounds like a great idea until you actually try to do it! Sprites aren't horrible, but tiles take forever. I gave up trying to do nice-looking 16x16 tiles for a game, let alone huge HK tiles. If we do start up another attempt at a community RTP, imo the graphics should be way less ambitious than HKCP. It just doesn't get done if there isn't money involved. It's also easier to customize them if they're smaller and stylistically simpler.

Anyway, welcome to the community! :)

Hi all of you and thanks for the replies! I totally agree about the workload of spriting involved with HKs. I mean, I haven't even started yet XD

Thank you Venetia for your permission. Now I can relax hehe.

I'm also considering the hand-drawn conversion method (scan a hand drawing then polish it up on the computer into a sprite) because I'm much quicker at hand drawing. I can't tell which of these methods are better until I get started first though, and it's hard when I have a busy schedule!
