Went and saw Hellboy II tonight.
I have to say, I was heartily impressed.
The first Hellboy, I liked it, I definitely think it had character, but nowhere NEAR on this level.
Basically the premise is, an ancient royal line had a magic crown that commanded a magic army designed to destroy anything and everything the wearer of the crown commanded. It was split into pieces and the prince went into exile because he was pissed about that.
Eventually the prince comes out of exile and takes the pieces by force. Then Hellboy, Abe, Liz, and a new compadre go and stop his ass.
The beginning was a little corny, and the end was VERY predictable, however the real charm of the movie lies in the execution.
The monsters in this movie are FREAKING FUCKING GODDAMNED AMAZING. I mean--these visual effects, animatronics, CG, everything--fucking top-notch. I sat through the credits and there was like 300 people working on this shit. I've not seen more amazing monsters and creatures since Pan's Labyrinth (which was also directed by Guillermo del Toro, making him instantly my favorite current director).
Even if you watch this movie on mute, WATCH IT. it's really a feast for the eyes in some parts.
The acting is good, I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it's compelling enough. The characters are as strong as ever, and they really flesh out Abe a lot more. The new protagonist (I won't say who it is) is awesome.
It was a little more like a fairy tale (a grim one) than a superhero movie, but there was plenty of action.
Anyway, I like it, I emphatically give it ... IDK, 4 out of 5 stars. I think I liked it better than Iron Man. But I'm a sucker for fairytales and monsters :3
