HDD Support

Hey,

I scored myself a dozen old computers that were being tossed out and I'm cannabilising parts and building a system... I'm putting in a salvaged HDD that is ...... well, it's 15GB.

Actually, I think it's SeaGate. But therein lies the problem. It has NO labelling on the HDD just a model number: SG20109-100REVA.

I went to SeaGate.com and checked their HDD archives but no disks with that model are in there, however similar ones are.

It's formatted and I have a windows boot-disk to install a new system, however I can't seem to get the jumpers right for Single/Master (there are no markings or anything on this HDD so it's all guess work)

It's a typical HDD board:

[ * * * * ] [ : : : : ] [ :::::::::::::::::::]

If Anyone could help I'd be much appreciative. Thanks.

I had a quick look on google with the model numbers, but it didn't come up with any jumper settings.

Maybe try searching for similar models, since jumper settings are sometimes the same between similar model lines.

Sorry i couldn't be of more help.

Actually... I did a lot of fishing around last night and I found it. I had to actually join a forum... the model number SG20109-100REVA only showed up in google in some Australian Phorum (sic) So I joined, PM'ed the guys who posted refering to their HDD, and one of them (luckily, because the posts were from 2005) still used one, actually he used an SG20109-300REVB. And the result was... success!

So for future reference, anyone owning a SG20109-100REVA or similar SeaGate HDD the jumper settings are (for Single Master):

[ * * * * ] [ : : : : ] [ :::::::::::::::::::]

Actually, the SeaGate website says:

The current U-Series and Barracuda ATA drive families (most ATA drives above 20 GBytes) follow the jumper configuration noted below. If you have an older drive please visit our Technical Library and find your model number for details on jumper configuration.

The SeaGate website does not have any documentation on the SG20109-100REVA, and I'm no computer expert so I wouldn't be able to guess the model number of a product I have never heard of before (and besides, I found a cable fault which was partly to blame for why my previous jumper-setting guesses failed - considering I tried all the vertical jumper settings first anyway).

But thanks for the help. (PS Prexus, I didn't see your post before I did my web search so I wasn't blatantly ignoring you - lol, just so you know).

This thread can be considered resolved! =)
