Having the map move while in the menu

OK, this actually a two part question.

I'm trying to make a section in the menu that has a different map as its background. So that when your in the section you see a character pacing across the screen.

I managed to get a different map to show in this menu, but the character doesn't move and if I choose to continue playing then I can't get back to the map I was on when I entered the main menu.

In other words, I just get my character transported to a different map while i'm in the menu and I can't get out and its paused.
