life drawing, obv not fully shaded yet.

this is a study using Perspective Distortion. it is used to force the viewer to focus in on a detail (here, it is the face).

i'll probably change the chair to be something cooler if i ever finish it.

Very nice, In my opinion.
I hope you do finish this, I would like to see the finished product.
Very interesting perspective, by the way.

hey I didn't know you were so good with a pencil. The only things that look odd to me are the guys little finger, it seems not even half the length of his next finger and it looks awkward the way it connects to his hand, and also is the guys ear hole really that deep and large? Maybe it's shaded to dark? It just looks like a bit of a hole.

I know it's supposed to be this way, but the perspective does give a kind of abstract feeling to the drawing because of the big head, and the position of the rest of the body.. though this might be different when the whole picture is more detailed.

by the way, calibre, I think it's a tablet drawing. :)

your linework is very clean, i like the way you did the cloth, and definitely diggin the perspective. one thing of note id like to add, that hasnt been said is his left hip seems a bit off. stand back and take a look at it, something is wrong there, with the way its attached to his body. that hip and thigh just looks like its a different perspective than the rest of the picture. also, the chair...looks wrong, looks like the back isnt in the same perspective as the seat and legs. i dunno, maybe its the way the top of the back of the chair slopes down into a downward curve thats just playing games with my eyes but it looks like the chair is twisted, but not really much of an issue since you said you were gonna probably change it to something else anyway. just thought id point it out

perspective distortion is the effect of looking at somethng with a ... "distorted lens", like a fish-eye lens. when you take a picture of something at an odd angle or when you look at something reflected in a not-quite-perfectly-flat mirror, or through slightly-warped glass, you're seeing something which doesn't constrain to the perfect confines of visual perspective. when used in art, it's designed to punctuate or accent a linear motion, spacial element, or focal point.

the slightly unsettling distortion in mass is intended here. i am not trying to draw something perfect to life. when it's done and shaded it will be designed to convey a gravity of emotion. (in fact, the emotion is: gravity).

and the hip thing you're seeing there--wear dress pants sometime fastened by a belt, then look at yourself leaning forward in a chair. the pocket bells out. it's not a hip, it's a "bubble" in the clothing.

and yeah it was done with a tablet. i've done pencil stuff that looks similar to this before though, too, but i'm in a mode where i hate traditional media for some reason @_@

Are you using the brush tool to do all this? If so, how are you getting your lines so clean? I've tried so many brush techniques and setups and can't get anything that clean. My stuff always looks like sketches.

yeah straight up brush tool. i really dont have much of a technique. it's just a very steady hand i guess. i can actually draw nearly perfect straight lines and circles without any guides. it's from lots of obsessive/compulsive practice. most of these strokes are single, broad strokes. Occasionally my hand putzes off though so I love me some ctrl+z. that's why i've been hating traditional media mostly, you can't hit undo when your hand retards out while holding an ink pen! ):

what you said up a couple posts (it was quite a long post i didnt want to take up so much space :)

i understand that its a distorted perspective (i dont need a lesson in what that is) and that hes wearing slacks, but its still slightly off from the rest, i didnt mean that it looks like he got hit by a bus or anything. no need to get so defensive. it really is quite a nice drawing

theres just something in that area of the drawing that looks wrong to me, if the mass of his thigh and hip are intentional and its the pocket then it looks like the folds there are off a bit. and since the intended focal point of the drawing is the head, with the perspective exaggerated towards his head being closer, to me it seems like his waist and hips being the furthest back part of his body would be smaller to accentuate the upper body coming forward.

if the drawing is intended to convey gravity, i think a stronger perspective change from upper to lower body would capture that a little better. like hes being pulled down by a gravity in the perspective of the drawing, as he kind of has a somber look on his face, like he feels trapped by the gravity of something stressful in his life.

i dunno, youre gonna do what youre gonna do. and it looks good as is, i was just being a critic. id love to see it finished

oh i wasnt being defensive, i apologize if it sounded that way. i was just explaining the technique b/c i wasn't sure if you knew what it was. no worries :D

and ty for the comments, really

I have one serious problem with it:
His butt seems to be too far back making it look likes he's on the back of the chair
and not the cushion,
In addition it makes him look like a hunchback >.<

Otherwise it looks nice,
and the line work is cleaner than I could ever wish for mine to be...

as text doesnt really convey mood or emotion well, i guess i read into it the wrong way. sorry for the misunderstanding.

but hopefully i cleared up what i meant in the first post about his hip/thigh, with more understanding of what your end goal was, i was better able to critique accurately. anyway, keep up the good work, dont let that piece go unfinished.
