Hand in Hand

Hay please be gentle I made this over the weekend its just a short demo but I had to release something so here.

Also I didn't playtest as thoroughly as I really should have so please tell me if there's any really shitty error's.

Story

Twenty years ago, the untamed wildlife of the Living Crag died. The soil became infertile, the plants died and rotted within a matter of hours. Even birds refused to fly over the hill.

An old healer from the nearby town of Elren has found a way to grow plants on Living Crag once again. Determined to help with the rebuilding of the place he used to play as a child, Holborn Bullham - the greatest swordsman in the land - swears to protect the healer and do whatever he can to help.

Characters

Holborn Bullham

Age: 39

A man obsessed with his past and determined that his daughter follows the same path that he did. He dislikes being contradicted, even when wrong, and is known to lash out quickly when annoyed. He is also quite impulsive and assumes everyone will agree with what he wants to do. Despite this he cares very deeply for both his daughter and his assistant.

Perivale Pin

Age: 17

A young girl studying to be a government witch. She is currently working as Holborn's assistant. She is very curious and demands a reason for everything she finds at all strange.

Kensal Bullham

Age: 16

Holborn's daughter. Her father is determined that she replicate his life exactly in order to make her a suitable heir. Unfortunately, this includes going to an all-boy's school.

Screenshots

None. Come on, the game's a 20 second download and a 10 minute play?

Awesome.

There were some small and annoying teleport errors that I cleared up with you on irc. Totally understandable considering how rushed this was.

The scene at the end was awesome. Holborn is a total badass. I look forward to next weekend. :3

Uploaded an updated version with fixed teleport's and the hero's name spelled right :x

The game has a great starting rhythm, i liked that, the characters background/personality are very strong and solid... this project looks really promesing
Waiting for chapter 2

lol got disheartened right when i got to town, begin my usual "let's inspect things and talk to npcs and check stuff" routine of rpg's, when i step into the church? I can's teleport to the upstairs OR out of the building, so i was stuck... not starting the intro scene over so, that's as far as im taking it unfortunately

like the character depth in such a short time though, and you didnt do the whole start the game off with back story to explain the situation like a lot of people seem to think is a good idea. thrusting players into the game and keeping the story simple at first is a time-tested way of story telling.

Another teleport error, I thought I'd caught them all. I deleted a few maps that were in front of the town and it fucked up my teleports.

Fuck teleports.

The next chapter should he up soon, which is somewhat lame since it was due some 3 weeks ago. I'll have the teleports fixed in that.

I'm considering leaving the database until I have the maps and story shit done, this would mean no battles and it'd be just one of those rmxp movies that were all the rage a while back except with more walking (I'd like opinions on this I prefer cutsceneing to other shit so it'd mean it's a lot more likely I'll get new bits out each week then I'll do the databasing when the story's done of course it'd mean the game itself would be crap until the last week but hey at least no random battles!).

Old saves might not work but I'll add a save from just before the skyferry sequence.

Yeah, go for it. Your strong point is certainly in storytelling and characters, so the battles would probably only weight it down. Plus battles are usually boring anyway.

Did you make the little sprite in your avatar?  It's adorable, I love it!

That's the sort of thing that could be brought up in a PM, yes? Here it's pretty much spam

You do have excellent storytelling abilities, and this isn't a full-blown serious project, so i say go for it. If it were to be taken more seriously, battle's and minigames are what make rpg's fun. I know everyone hates grind, but if you just rushed through a story line, essentially a movie, why watch substandard 2D video game graphic novels?

Not a clue what that problem is, sorry. I've never had that happen but I'll try to look into it.
