Goodbye Virginity or Goodbye Internet - URGENT

Stop Virgin NOW.

Keep Virgin from destroying the internet...

The new CEO of Virgin Media, Neil Berkett, has openly stated in an interview that they think net neutrality is “a load of bollocksâ€

I thought from the title that this would be about an ultimatum your girlfriend offered you about spending less time on the internet if you want to have sex with her.

P.S. Is there some sort of petition or something?

You can't stop it.
You can't, it's impossible.  They have the actual right to do with their service as they deem fit.  It sucks, but businesses will love it.  If it makes money, no one's going to bitch but us peons.

Fortunately like with all things, there will be some sort of provider out there that will either be set up, or decide to stay the course and offer exactly what these guys are trying to kill: neutrality and fairness.

The only way you can fight this is if you trump up some censorship violations, media control, etc.  Make the over blown comparison to Red China in a full media's eye, and catch some people's attentions - and while a bit far stretched, people will believe fear, it's easy.  And maybe that's a good thing.

Yea, I'm thinking of a way RMXP.org can join the campaign to help spread the word about net neutrality. This sort of thing affects small communities like ours because you know we'd never pay big ISP's to be put in their "fast lane".

I saw this over on gaming world, and I think this is absolutley retarted. Can they really do this?

Yes and no. Legally they can do whatever they want with their service (provided it complies with current legislation) but they will have state somewhere that they are doing it (which means a huge amount of paperwork for them) legally they can do it but not just right away. (though if they really tried it wouldn't take them too long)

It's not too far off becoming reality, the only way it can be stopped is people use the media effectively, even then I don't think it can be stopped completely. It would take a lot of effort from a lot of people.

Ahaha their ukranian accents are so cute. :3

This doesn't really bother me much. I seriously doubt it will become a big issue in places where there are multiple Internet providers, like the United States. People will switch to the provider that stays neutral. So I doubt it will be too big of a deal.

A lot of idiots won't bother switching, like the old people who use AOL and the average dad who just needs his ESPN highlights. But people like us who actually USE THE INTERNET would switch to a provider that stays neutral. So it won't really affect us.

Congrats to the companies who are deciding to do this, though. I'm a fan of corporate america and all that, and it's a pretty good moneymaking scheme.  :thumb:

This makes me angry I'm still with Virgin for my Internet. I got rid of VM TV, as it was absolutely shite, always down, never any program information, crap customer support, ("Have you tried turning it off and on again?"), and an interface a 6 year old kid could have programmed to work better.

Will this actually make websites slower, or just make some websites faster? (I.e. the smaller sites load the same speed as before, but google suddenly loads 2x as fast?"

I use Telus ATM, and they seem OK, I think.
In terms of neutrality, that is. Not in terms of quality of customer 'service', etc...

But anyways, yeah. They have the right to do this, I believe, and you have the right to cancel your account with them. World works in mysterious ways.

Hey, I have roadrunner, so I don't really care. Besides, don't we have a rule against advertising online petitions somewhere?

This isn't going to happen in the near future. Should it happen, Virgin are fucked because they're only just starting to get the edge over BT. Sky give free broadband and BT are neutral- why should people stay with Virgin?

Virgin also rent out their lines to other ISPs, so they're going to have some serious difficulties making this actually work as doing it at the present moment would land them in court by all the smaller ISPs.

Anyway, even Brown is more savvy than the US courts and has stated he would legislate against widespread attacks on neutrality.

Virgin are doing broadband+digital+landline+mobile for £40 a month which is a pretty schweet deal so even if this did go ahead I wouldn't mind too much...

Bellsouth DSL, so, no worries for now. However, this is slightly unnerving to see big corporations already trying to blatantly control the world ... If it comes to that in truth, then, I'm sure, We're not the only ones to put up a protest.

/\ The broadband has this, the digital seriously sucks (it's always down, always have to reset the box, get cut off in the middle of pay-per-view films because of "technical difficulties", no program information all the while (so you can't set reminders or see what's on)), the landline has to be with Virgin (i.e. if you ever want to leave Virgin you have all the trouble of having your BT line reinstated), and their mobile phone rates are too high even to other Virgin phones.

Just my opinions, anyway. :p
