What is it and how does it play?

Asteroid Defense is, you've guessed it, a defense game, you control a turret in the middle of the screen and have to stop them from hitting you. You have three lives meaning you can be hit thrice and then it's game over, although there's an upside to the lives... if you make it to and while you're on the final level, for every 10,000 score you reach, you earn an extra health, although this stops once you hit 100,000 score and you're on your own from there to try and get as high a score as possible.

The turret you control has been designed by some super ultra nerd who has created some bouncy ball bullets, which will bounce off the asteroids they hit, which is really helpful. At the moment these are your default bullets, I wanted to add them as an upgrade or something, but didn't put the effort into doing so...

The game uses a progressive difficulty system, the first level is easy (Or I hope...) and with each level it gets progressively harder, the sixth being the final level, however on this level you are given extra lives to start with, and it just carries on forever so you can go for a high score.

There are three types of Asteroids, big medium and small, they all do the same thing, except the smaller it is the faster it moves, I was going to make it so the smaller ones gave more points, but again, didn't put the effort in, lol.

The game itself is really easy if you can click really fast since it's pretty much just a clickfest
Oh, and let me just say, everything in the game is 100% custom and created by myself, just to put that out there so you can see just how serious I am.

Download Game (v1.21) (10.84MB)
Download Font (34.48 KB)

You don't really need the font, since it's only used for the high scores table, everything else has been made as a picture, so if you don't want to download it you don't have to.

Version 1.0 - Vanilla.

Version 1.1 - Added window resizing support to allow people with smaller resolution screens to display the game properly, by default the window is 800x800.

Version 1.2 - Made all asteroids move 25% slower and doubled the points they give, added progressive difficulty, and changed the layout of the main menu
Version 1.21 - Fixed the error message about a missing variable and gotten rid of the god mode bug

I'll be sure and download it when I get home.

Gotta be honest though, those gradients are killin' me. Especially the sky.

Yeah, don't ask why I used gradients, even I don't know, although I do like the colours of the sky... maybe it's because without gradients it'd look odd, I don't know, trying to make a radial sky/space/whatever is kinda weird, lol.

I can def see where you're coming from w/ the gradients, since in a game like this there's so much going on in the foreground, if you have a distracting background it's just going to interfere and be a pain in the ass no matter how nice it looks.

Hmm that's odd... I'll find somewhere else to upload it, it worked for me earlier o.O

---

Okay so I've reuploaded it to MediaFire (MegaUpload is a bag of shit I suppose...) and it works for me, check it again and see, if not.. where would you suggest?

And.... DONE.

Yes, I finally got around to playing it. It was a bit too intense for my flavor. I felt like it was kind of all about swinging around clicking as fast as I can. If it started out with just a few asteroids and accelerated to the level you have it at now, it would be super cool.

It's a bit too large even at my 1366 x 768 resolution, so I couldn't see part of the top of it. Might wanna fix that.

But I thought it was very neat and well done, and I really like the art style.

Well I THINK it's set at 800x800 which I guess is too tall for some monitors, I'll see about resizing it or something.

Also, I'm not sure about progressive difficulty but I should look into it.

I'll have to look through it again and see what I can do.

Just out of curiosity, what was your highest score? Did you manage to get any extra lives?

Okay so I've updated the game to v1.1 (Although that's just for fancy, lol), I've added window resizing support for those of you with vertical resolutions smaller than 800, you'll ofcourse have to redownload the game though, lol. Turns out there's an option for it in the editor... didn't even know, lol.

My highest score is only like 1000. The new one didn't seem to resize at all, and I ran into some weird glitch where I just kept exploding without dying and I couldn't die.

Wow that's weird, I've just ran into it too, my testing basically involved opening the game to the titlescreen and seeing if I could resize it, which I could, lol (Just drag the edges like resizing a window), didn't actually try to play the game afterwards...

This is really odd, I'll see if I can do anything to fix it, and in the meantime I'll post up the older version since it seems to work but it's just too big for some people, lol.

Edit---

Okay so I've changed things around, done a little more testing, and I think I've cracked it, I've played through and died three times now and there's been no weird glitches or anything, and resizing works fine again, although I've changed how it resizes, now it'll always keep aspect ratio, that is, the gamescreen will, not the window, so you could have a rectangular window but the gamescreen will be centered in the middle. Not really the best way to go, but hey, it's functional.

~Reuploading it now.

v1.1 is back up, hopefully this time there won't be any bugs or glitches, I've just tried it on my brothers computer and it worked fine.

would you mind if i made a track for this? im gonna give it a whirl but i wanted to offer some music for it if youd like :D

Jason

Awesome Bro

Hey that's fine by me, I mean, the one I've made might not be the best but I think it suits it pretty well, if you want to make a track for it, knock yourself out, I'd love to hear what you come up with, and I'll more than likely put it in the game too, lol.
