Gaming Questionnaire

Rain

Sponsor

Hi everyone!

I have a questionnaire that I have had to put together for my A2 Media research (which will count towards my final grade) and I have to ask as wide a variety of people as possible to answer this.

Now, rather than try handing out these questionnaires as flyers to the people of central London in the hope that they complete them and hand them back (Very unlikely ':| ) I have decided to choose you! The great gaming public!

Please fill out this questionnaire and then either repost your answers in this thread if you wish or PM me if you want to keep the results to just me and you.

I understand this may be asking a lot for nothing but it would really help me out and would only take a few moments of your time.... you never know, you might enjoy it. ;)

14) Do you believe that video games can affect people’s behavior?
Yes, due to owning some hard games as a child, I've developed anger problems.

15) What do you feel to the media’s perception of video games?
Most of the media doesn't see much wrong with them.

There you go. :)

1) How old are you? 16

2) What gender are you? male

3) Do you play Video Games? Yes, many

4) Why do you play Video Games? An escape from reality, and just damn fun!

5) How long have you been playing video games? since I was born - literally!

6) What genres of video games do you play?
RPG (Role Playing Games)

I'll play too!

1) How old are you?
23.

2) What gender are you?
Male.

3) Do you play Video Games?
Yes.

4) Why do you play Video Games?
Many reasons; relaxation, inspiration, shared interest with some friends (and even family).

5) How long have you been playing video games?
I had an Intellivision when I was 5 at least, so, eighteen years, if not longer - I don't remember that far back.

6) What genres of video games do you play?
RPGs, strategy games, rhythm/music games, adventure games

7) Do you play violent video games? If so, Why?
"Violent" is a broad term. I don't actively seek out or find outstanding enjoyment in Mature-rated games, although I'm sometimes impressed with stylized violence (ala Killer 7), but it doesn't usually sway me one way or the other. I do tend to roll my eyes at games boasting X number of ways to dismember an enemy into Y number of body parts, though.

8) What is the average age rating of video games you have bought?
ESRB ratings? Probably, T. I haven't bought an M-rated game since God of War.

9) Do you play Video Games with a higher age rating than yourself? If so, how do you get hold of these games?
I played a few M-rated games before the specified age. Metal Gear Solid comes to mind. Actually that was a gift. And also, it wasn't even mine, my parents bought it for my brother, who is 3 years younger than me. That was 1998, so, he was 12. My parents are gamers too, to a degree.

10) What was the last Violent Video Game you bought?
M-rated, that was God of War. If you count Final Fantasy XII as violent, though, then that one. I mean, that one guy gets a knife to the gut 15 minutes in; that's pretty violent. (That's not a spoiler right?)

11) How do you feel if you lose at a video game?
Really depends on the game. If it's an RPG, and I get a game-over 45 minutes into a particularly brutal dungeon, I'll probably be rather miffed. If it's missing a beat on a song in Elite Beat Agents that I've been playing for 30 seconds, it's not so bad. Usually.

12) How long on average do you play video games each week?
Probably about 30 hours a week. (MMO addict, but only on weekends, I promise).

14) Do you believe that video games can affect people’s behavior?
Over a long term, I certainly believe so, but since everybody perceives and reacts differently, it's hard to generalize. I'm actually less of an introvert after playing games with others online, for example.

15) What do you feel to the media’s perception of video games?
The media has many faces about video games in general. The obvious answer is the overly-dramatic and oft-unfounded (at least I think so) bits on the glorification of graphic violence. Of course, there are also more level-headed economic reports on the release of new systems (ie, most of last November), and to a lesser extent, attention to the technology utilized in newer systems, and how it can benefit other industries or causes. The general media only recently (the last I can remember was the PS2 launch) began to recognize electronic entertainment as a serious form of entertainment, which is mostly good attention for the industry, unless it's twisted into more ammo for the opposition.

1) How old are you?

1) How old are you?
I'm 20.

2) What gender are you?
male.

3) Do you play Video Games?
Yup.

4) Why do you play Video Games?
For fun and inspiration.

5) How long have you been playing video games?
For 17 years I believe.

6) What genres of video games do you play?
- RPG
- Puzzle

- Action

7) Do you play violent video games? If so, Why?
Most of the violent games I play are Survival-Horror games. I play them because I love getting thrilled by the gore and morbid atmosphere.

8) What is the average age rating of video games you have bought?
I really -never- paid attention to that. But most of them are RPGs so I guess the age rating should be something like 12-16 ?

9) Do you play Video Games with a higher age rating than yourself? If so, how do you get hold of these games?
I never paid attention to that too. In any case, the small retailers won't really pay attention if you're (or not) of age for the game you're buying.

10) What was the last Violent Video Game you bought? (If any)
Silent Hill 2

11) How do you feel if you lose at a video game?
I never lose...
Well, sometime I do XD
I feel like being put in competition with the game itself and as a result, I play until I win.

12) How long on average do you play video games each week?
25-30 Hours maybe?

14) Do you believe that video games can affect people’s behavior?
I believe so. But I never witnessed great behavior's changes in people I know.

15) What do you feel to the media’s perception of video games?
I think that they're often wrong, categorizing all the players as geekies/nerds.

8) What is the average age rating of video games you have bought?
12/15+ (However a lot of the RPG's I play are around 3+ ^_^)

9) Do you play Video Games with a higher age rating than yourself? If so, how do you get hold of these games?
Not now that I am 18! However, before I was 18, I usually tried my luck in HMV/Game or bought them online from either Amazon on Play.com

10) What was the last Violent Video Game you bought? (If any)
Well you tend to buy them all :p .. but lets go with Canis Canem Edit (AKA. Bully)

11) How do you feel if you lose at a video game?
Seriously frustrated

12) How long on average do you play video games each week?
15-20 hours.

If you answered these questions please move now to question 14 - Should this not say 13?!

13) What are your perceptions of video games? ( do you feel they are childish/interesting e.t.c)
I enjoy them, believe they can release aggression/tension, and can take your mind of things into a different world.

14) Do you believe that video games can affect people’s behavior?
Yes, but only to a certain extent. I think games influence people, widening their interests in other things, e.g. Fantasy ---> Manga ---> Anime

However, I think people will imitate video games, e.g. pretend to go around with a huge sword or rocket launcher, and although they may want to blow peoples heads off, I don't think many/any people would go to that extent.

15) What do you feel to the media’s perception of video games?
I think the media take things far too seriously in that games are effecting people's psychology/behaviour etc. Any types of media can do that to people; television, books, games.

I think that the media believe people are going to go around killing people after playing a game of GTA - However, games that include violence generally allow the player to calm themselves down, by taking their aggression out on either the controller, or the NPC's in the game. Although, a lot of the media are now starting to believe this, which can only be a good thing.

xx

1) How old are you?

20

2) What gender are you?

Male

3) Do you play Video Games?

Yes

4) Why do you play Video Games?

Entertainment

5) How long have you been playing video games?

15-16 years.

6) What genres of video games do you play?
RPG (Role Playing Games)
Strategy Games
Stealth Games
Beat Em Up
Simulation Games
Conceptual
Puzzle

7) Do you play violent video games? If so, Why?

Generally I prefer cartoon violence (read: World of Warcraft) over realistic violence (read: Counter-Strike) because of the light hearted nature. It is generally more fun to me to see cartoony creatures bounce around firing bolts of lightning at each other and turning into sheep, than putting an AWP round through a terrorist's head.

8) What is the average age rating of video games you have bought?

Probably M(18+?) because that is the rating most games get, due to the highly strict rules imposed by the ESRB.

9) Do you play Video Games with a higher age rating than yourself? If so, how do you get hold of these games?

I did, when I was younger. In those days, the 'age verification' was much more relaxed. There was no issue as to whether or not I'd be able to obtain the game. The first game I ever encountered this with was Halo 2, which I was capable of buying myself at the time.

10) What was the last Violent Video Game you bought? (If any)

As far as the ESRB is concerned, the World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade expansion would fit that glove. However as far as I'm concerned, it was probably Halo 2.

11) How do you feel if you lose at a video game?

Generally disheartened that I wasn't able to accomplish whatever goal I was trying to accomplish. Sometimes I get a bit frustrated, and step way from the game for a while, but more often than not I just restart from where I left off and continue.

12) How long on average do you play video games each week?

Too much. Maybe.. 48 hours total? Depending on what's going on in World of Warcraft at the time. Since the new expansion released, probably more like 72.

14) Do you believe that video games can affect people’s behavior?

Yeah I do. There are a lot of people out there that take things far too seriously. I don't necessarily believe it's the Video Game that is at fault. I'm sure a movie of the same calibre would invoke the same reaction on the person.

15) What do you feel to the media’s perception of video games?

To begin with, I believe the media was a bit stand-offish with Video Games. Leaving them to their own devices, as the players of them were a niche-group. However, within the last five to ten years, the rising popularity of Video Games, coupled with the advertising opportunities and sponsorship programs to indie developers, have swept the media up. Video Games are probably among the top ten things people spend their money on in North America these days.

1) How old are you?
22
2) What gender are you?
Male
3) Do you play Video Games? (If not please move on to question 11)
Yes!
4) Why do you play Video Games?
I dunno, it's fun. I play RPGs not only to waste time but to take in the stories. Every genre has its own appeal for me, but mostly I use video games to help unwind.
5) How long have you been playing video games?
Since I was two or three, so 19-20 years.
6) What genres of video games do you play?

8) What is the average age rating of video games you have bought?
Probably T.
9) Do you play Video Games with a higher age rating than yourself? If so, how do you get hold of these games?
They do not make such games, although I did when I was younger. My mom bought them for me, usually after reading about them in one of my magazines or something. As I got older she ceased to care.
10) What was the last Violent Video Game you bought? (If any)
World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade Expansion is violent I suppose.
11) How do you feel if you lose at a video game?
"I guess I have to try that again, darn."
12) How long on average do you play video games each week?
Probably 20-30, although this is focused almost entirely on the weekends, which should give you an idea of what my weekends consist of.
If you answered these questions please move now to question 14

13) What are your perceptions of video games? ( do you feel they are childish/interesting e.t.c)
I think they are an exceptionally interesting, long lasting form of digital entertainment, and can be both childish and very mature depending on the game you're playing. I love em.
14) Do you believe that video games can affect people’s behavior?
Not in so many words. I believe video games can stimulate pre-existing behaviors in people.
15) What do you feel to the media’s perception of video games?
I think the media doesn't know what it's talking about and needs to shut up! :D

1) How old are you?
15.

Since 1997
6) What genres of video games do you play?
RPG (Role Playing Games)
