Gah! I need help with meh comp

Okay...My computer (Windows XP) is downloading stuff by itself and it has this thing that tell me that I have spyware and all this stuff and i really dont care...But I want it off and I can't figure out how to get it off! It's really annoying and please help!

I assume that you have some kind of anti-virus program, correct?

Run a full system scan (depending on your computer, it will probably take about 30 minutes). Once it is complete, it should have identified any spyware/viruses/worms/etc. on your computer and give you the file path. Simply follow the file path that they provide and delete those files (most antivirus programs will do this for you automatically).

Most likely they are located in your Cookies folder, or inside a program you have downloaded.

The two main ways viruses and spyware get into your computer is either through Cookies (which are automatically downloaded to your computer when you browse the web) and through programs that you download to your computer.

To lower the chance of this happening again:

1) Always try to stick to trusted sites. Sites owned by major corporations (Microsoft, Sunsystems, etc.), government sites (.gov in the U.S.), and other major names (Myspace, etc.) are policed frequently and are less likely to have spyware cookies.

2) Scan anything you download BEFORE you open/run it. Every time you download something, scan it with your antivirus software. This can sometimes find viruses hiding in the program before it can infect your PC.

3) Run Full-System antivirus scans regularly. At least once a week, you should have your antivirus program scan your C: drive.

4) Raise the security settings on your browser (Optional). Go to (for Internet Explorer) Tools>Internet Options>Security and you can raise your security level setting. I would recommend running it at Medium level, and that will help filter out things like unsigned cookies or certificates.

Some people also regularly delete cookies (in U.S. web browsers, go to Tools>Internet Options>Delete Cookies). Most of the time, this isn't necessary, though.

Moved to the correct forum! Also if it's really, really bad you can always just completely wipe the harddrive by repartitioning (google it)

Seriously, use windows system restore to a point before this started happening. If it's just plain old ad-ware/spyware, that gets it 80% of the time. If that doesn't work, then go all out.

Is it your Antivirus program that is giving you warnings, or did they just start popping up on their own? Do you even have Antivirus/Internet Security?

Viruses aren't to common by just surfing the web. You must have visited a site that have contained the infected file, and probably downloaded it from there. Most spyware cannot be triggered by just visiting a site, even if the said site has spyware on it. Be sure to check what you download and from where before downloading things.

I once had this annoying thing down by the clock that popped up every 5 minutes of so that said that I had a critical system error, and that I should "click here" to download a program to get rid of it.
I got it fixed eventually, but I my computer was still getting slower... and slower, which made me think that it wasnt all fixed...

Since then, I rebooted that computer, and havd only connected it to the internet for things like updates, and for getting the images for all of my music in iTunes. ^_^
Other than that, it runs fine.
Although I am reloading it soon, because I am getting a new hard drive. (I have a laptop, so it is more like replacing it)

Anyway, Spyware doctor is a good program, it fixed all of my problems. Also a good one would be windows Defencer (free btw) and Ad-Adware (free also).
They together work pretty good.

Ok. Assuming that you don't have any type of antivirus or antispyware software, download the newset AVG free, CCleaner and a trial of Spy Sweeper or AVG antispyware. Install, update, run CCleaner, turn off hibernation and system restore on your computer (Hibernation is under Display properties>Screen Saver> Power Settings> Hibernation and system restore can be found under the system properties Windowskey+Pause/Breakkey>system restore) and restart into safe mode with networking (after restarting when right after your bios splash screen comes up press F8 like a motherF). Once in safe mode go to add/remove programs in the control panel and delete anything like "Winantispyware 2006" or "Web search assistant" or "survey/deal finder". Use descretion. After doing so Spy sweeper which will tell you that "You are running in safe mode, would you like to run in diagnostic mode?" Say yes. hen run a full system scan and quarentine whatever it finds. Sounds like you have a couple nasty trojans. I bet it wil find "Fakealert" on your machine. If running AVG antispyware, just open and run scan and delete the found problems. Then run AVG antivirus and run a full system scan and again, delete what it finds. Reboot and turn system restore back on and keep those programs updated! :) That should get rid of that problem. If it does not actually get rid of the problem you should check out Vondofix and Combofix. They get rid of a couple naaaasty fakealert type trojans, but only a couple! :D Let me know if this helps. Also, try to lay off the porn, jk :)
