The anatomy and proportions are pretty decent for a first try and your colors are surprisingly mellow (usually newbies like to hike the saturation to the max).  My only major gripe at this point is the right rear leg, which is both over sized and attached backward. 

Lighting and shadow are something that you have to learn over a long time with lots of practice, but speaking from experience it's best to just dive in and not worry about messing it up.  I went for a couple years as a kid refusing to do any kind of shading for fear of getting it wrong before I realized that at worst I'd have to erase it and at best I'd actually learn to get it right.  Your eye is going to tell you when it's wrong, and observation, study and practice is going to teach you how it aught to look.  There are some great lessons in the Pixel Academy forum that will introduce you to shading, and in the stickies at the top of this forum are some really good introductions as well to get you started.
